Ziprasidone is a mental health drug indicated for use in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It was the fifth drug of its kind to gain the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It gained FDA’s approval in 2001 and since then, it was prescribed to treat several mental states including mania and depression.
Due to its found harsh effects in older patients with dementia, Ziprasidone is not approved for use in them. An older patient put on antipsychotic drug such as Ziprasidone has been found to have a higher mortality rate.
Ziprasidone comes in two forms, a capsule that is to be taken by mouth and an intramuscular form that is administered through injection. Ziprasidone comes in 20mg, 40mg, 60mg, and 80mg capsules. The intramuscular form of Ziprasidone, on the other hand, comes in 20mg concentration. The prescribed dose depends on the patient’s variable factors. Initially, patients are started on a 20mg dose. The dosage is adjusted slowly based on the patient’s progress. Naturally, dosage adjustment occurs at an interval of one to three days, monitoring all the while the body’s reaction to the drug.
The duration period of treatment is also not accurately established. In some cases, Ziprasidone is used as a maintenance drug to prevent any subsequent attacks of abnormal moods in patients who have a recurring mental illness.
Before using Ziprasidone, several precautions apply. Aside from the fact that older people who are being treated for behavioral problems in connection with dementia, young and healthy patients must also undergo the assessment process of a qualified physician to be safe with the drug.
Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drug or if you are taking any drug at the moment. Ziprasidone may impose harsh allergic reactions as well as interactions with other drugs. Also, your doctor must know about health conditions you may have had including illegal substance abuse, heart problems, stroke, seizures, breast cancer, diabetes, and liver or kidney disease.
Ziprasidone may cause high blood sugar level even in patients who do not have diabetes. Have yourself checked for signs of hyperglycemia while under Ziprasidone treatment so that your symptoms are managed.
Ziprasidone is also contraindicated to patients who undergo strenuous physical activities, those who take alcohol, and those who participate in activities that require attention. One of the effects of Ziprasidone is drowsiness and your alcohol intake may worsen it. Also, patients under Ziprasidone treatment are advised not to participate in any activity that requires attention like driving or operating a machine and in activities that can make you sweat like vigorous exercise.
Ziprasidone cause side effects that usually go away as soon as the body becomes well adjusted to the presence of the drug in the system. Minor side effects include drowsiness, diarrhea, headache, anxiety, appetite loss, muscle pain, cough and colds, and weight gain. If such symptoms persist or worsen, talk to your doctor. You must also tell your doctor if you experience severe and serious cases of irregular heartbeats, rash or hives, fever, confusion, and painful erection.
