Venlafaxine is an antidepressant drug that is used to treat several disorders including depression, panic disorder, social phobia, and anxiety disorder. It works on two chemical compounds in the brain namely norepinephrine and serotonin. Several studies have proven that Venlafaxine is indeed effective including in the prevention of depression relapse.
For years, Venlafaxine has been the trusted name for many. In fact, it has made a remarkable presence in the market, garnering the most number of sales in 2006. Venlafaxine was introduced by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in 1993.
Venlafaxine is an extended release oral drug that comes in capsule and tablet forms. It is prescribed to be taken once a day with food. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablets; swallow it in whole. If you are taking the capsule form and you are having a difficulty swallowing, you can pour the contents of Venlafaxine capsule onto a spoonful of applesauce.
Taking Venlafaxine at regular intervals is important to maintain even levels of the drug in your body. Also, taking Venlafaxine at about the same time each day is important so you do not miss a dose. If you happen to miss a dose, you must take your drug as soon as you remember. However, if it is too close to your next dose, it would be better to drop the missed dose and just continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Venlafaxine only works effectively if it is used properly. To enjoy its full benefits, you must stick to your doctor’s instructions. Do not stop taking the drug even if you feel well.
Before taking Venlafaxine , there are extra precautions you must take. Venlafaxine is strictly available as prescribed. You cannot take it without seeing a doctor first. This means that you cannot just take somebody else’s prescription even if you have the same symptoms as that patient.
Consulting a doctor regarding Venlafaxine use is important to keep you safe with the drug and of course, to make sure that it is actually what you need. Discuss certain factors that might affect the results of a Venlafaxine treatment in your case.
Tell your doctor about health conditions you have other than the one being treated. Heart problems, hypertension, glaucoma, liver disease, kidney ailments, and bleeding disorders are of great concern. Also, disclose the prescription and non-prescription drugs that you are currently using. Venlafaxine may interact with certain drugs.
Venlafaxine causes certain discomforts that come in as side effects. The symptoms may be mild or severe in your case depending on how your body reacts to the presence of the drug in your system. Nausea, vomiting, headache, drowsiness, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, sweating, and vertigo among others are common. Such symptoms usually go away as soon as your body becomes adjusted to the drug. However, you must closely monitor your body for the occurrence of less common but serious side effects. Abnormal vision, increased anxiety, suicidal tendencies, and external bleeding must take you to an appointment with your doctor immediately.
