Vaniqa, which is generically prescribed as eflornithine topical, is commonly used to treat unwanted facial hair in women. Vaniqa does not eliminate facial hair, but it can slow the growth and the thickness of the facial hair in order to dramatically improve appearance.
Vaniqa is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes skin allergies, open sores, irritated facial skin, or severe acne may not be able to take Vaniqa or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated Vaniqa as a pregnancy risk category C. It has yet to be determined whether or not Vaniqa will cause harm or birth defects in unborn babies. It has also yet to be determined whether or not Vaniqa will pass through the mother’s breast milk and affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to women who are pregnant or nursing, or to women who have a high likelihood of becoming pregnant.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Vaniqa, some of which are severe. A patient who is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with side effects such as facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require immediate emergency medical attention include symptoms such as severe burning, peeling, or severe irritation.
Less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as burning, itching, redness, mild irritation, tingling, hair follicle bumps, or stinging. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Vaniqa.
Vaniqa should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed by the physician. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to avoid the potential for an overdose. The patient should never take a double dose of this medication. If an overdose is suspected, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. Although it is unlikely that an overdose of Vaniqa would occur, an overdose will present with symptoms such as blistering, peeling, burning, tingling, numbness, and severe irritation.
There is a potential risk of negative drug interactions associated with Vaniqa. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medications and herbal remedies. Medications with a known negative drug interactions with Vaniqa include other topical medications, especially those which may cause irritation. Vaniqa should not be mixed with topicals which treat acne, psoriasis, or any other skin condition. Vaniqa may make the patient more susceptible to sun burn. Proper precautions should be taken against sun irritation or sun burn. It may take as long as 8 weeks to see results from the use of Vaniqa.

It took 6 weeks for Vaniqa to stat working (used morning and night) but after the said 6 weeks I had only 3 or 4 hairs to pluck daily. This is coming from plucking every single morning for about 45min. I was ecstatic with the results. However, since then I have not been able to get Vaniqa as the supplier no longer supplies it to Australia. I am very disappointed as the hair has all grown back and it will take 6 weeks again (and $230 out of pocket) to get the results again. That is if Australia is supplied with Vaniqa again ('they' say November).
I really do love Vaniqa and can't wait to statr using it again!

I tried Vaniqa because I wanted to stop or reduce waxing and was tired of plucking those coarse little hairs from my chin. A small tube cost me $70!! Although it seemed to work when I used it deligently, I had a hard time keeping up with the 2xdaily application. What I discovered when I didn't apply it is that not only did the hair come back but MORE hair came back than ever before and in places I did not have a problem with before. I actually ended up using it to encourage hair growth around my eyebrows that have gotten too thin. I have gone back to waxing which is much more effective and actually causes less hair to grow back - unfortunately now I'm waxing more areas than before.

While this product really works I now have had upper lip numbness for the past two weeks. I don't know which is more annoying- this numbness when I eat, smile etc or the hair.
