  Valsartan

Valsartan

Valsartan review

Valsartan belongs to a group of drugs referred to as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure as well as heart failure. It is likewise prescribed for individuals who suffered from heart attacks since it can reduce the chances of death among patients who have congestive heart failure. The medicine can also be used to reduce the hospitalization in individuals having congestive heart failure. Valsartan reduces the blood pressure and dilates the blood vessels through blocking the angiosten. Angiosten is responsible for blood pressure through the narrowing of the blood vessels.

Valsartan may likewise be used in protecting the kidneys from further damage caused by diabetes.

Valsartan is a prescription drug available in capsules of 40 up to 320 milligrams. The capsules should be stored at room temperature not higher than 30°C. Patients are usually prescribed a maximum of 320 mg daily dose. Reduction of the blood pressure may occur within a month. For patients suffering from congestive heart failure, doctors prescribe 40mg to be taken twice in a day. It can be then increased up to 160 mg two times a day. Valsartan should not be taken with food since it can decrease the absorption of the drug.

Valsartan can also interact with certain drugs like diuretics, potassium supplements, and salt substitutes, thereby putting the patient at risk of hyperkalemia. For patients who have had heart failure, Valsatran may increase serum creatinine, which is an examination for checking the kidney functions.

Valsartan must be taken regularly so that patients will recover in the soonest possible time. Patients must not take salt substitute or potassium supplements while taking Valsartan without consulting their doctors. Valsartan can raise one’s potassium levels, and result to side effects like irregular heartbeat and weakening of the muscles.

Valsartan can have possible side effects on its users. Patients who use Valsartan may experience fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, and lightheadedness. This is quite normal especially if the body is adjusting to the drug. In case the effects continue or even worsen, then the patient should inform their doctors immediately.

Patients should also immediately inform their doctors if any of the following side effects happen like fainting and decreased sexual drive. Other serious but remote side effects are infrequent urinating, signs of possible infection such as chills, sore throat, and fever, as well as abdominal and stomach pains. Patients may also experience side effects such as pain in the abdomen and stomach, yellowing skin and eyes, dark urine, chest pains, and unexplained fatigue. Patients may likewise experience other side effects like itching and swelling of the face, throat, tongue, and lips, dizziness, and difficulty in breathing.

Pregnant women must never take Valsartan. Valsartan may cause injury and at times, death, to fetus when used by pregnant women especially those in the latter stages of their pregnancy. In case a pregnancy is detected, then women should stop taking Valsartan as immediately as possible.
