  Trazodon

Trazodon

Trazodon review by Medicalook.com

Trazodon is a unique from traditional tetracyclic and tricyclic drugs. It also can be used to aid SSRI. The drug has become a staple in many treatment regimens focusing on depression. Knowing more about the mechanism of action, adverse reactions and possible risks will help patients boost its useful effects.

Trazodoen is a psychoactive compound which is chemically and pharmacologically distinct from tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressant drugs. Compared to most TCA drugs, it has less anticholinergic and adrenolytic effects. Trazodon does not have the fused ring structures that tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants have. It is also used together with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. Even children can take the drug as an aid to SSRI.

Generally, Trazodon is used for the treatment of depression. It belongs to a group of drugs called serotonin modulators which boosts the amount of serotonin, a chemical in the brain promoting mental wellness. The serotonin modulator can also be used to treat schizophrenia, anxiety, alcohol abuse and abnormal movements coming from the side effects of other medications.

Trazodon is a triazolopyridine derivative which also comes in other names like Trittico, Thombran, Desyrel, Trialodine and Molipaxin. Other known conditions that the drug can treat include clinical depression with or without anxiety, fibromyalgia, nightmares or difficulty sleeping, chronic insomnia, panic disorder, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, alcohol withdrawal and diabetic neuropathy.

There are several side effects associated with improper consumption of Trazodon. Effects usually manifest as early as a week but patients should cautiously watch out for these signs: drowsiness, lethargy, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, increased libido, headache, ataxia, weakness, paralysis, euphoria, muscle twitching, numbness, dry mouth, blurred vision, priapism, urinary frequency, incontinence or retention, constipation, hypertension, palpitations, weight gain or loss, menstrual changes, diarrhea, apnea, dyspnea and cardiac arrest.

People suffering from cardiac problems or those who had a history of stroke, arrhythmias and cardiovascular disease should not take the drug. Trazodon may also impair mental and physical abilities so dangerous occupations and activities should be avoided. Trazodon is contraindicated to individuals with known hypersensitivity to it. It also has known interactions with some drugs, supplements and herbs like St. John’s wort. People should consult their doctor first and inform them of all past and underlying conditions that may be aggravated like AIDS, HIV, bipolar disorder and mania.

Trazodon has an antagonistic effect at the 5-HT2 receptor site. Receptor sites usually bind neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin which causes mood elevation. Once Trazodon acts on the receptor sites, serotonin levels will begin to rise resulting to improved mood for depressed patients.

16 clinically depressed patients were included in a trial wherein they started taking 50 mg of Trazodon for 2 weeks. The dosage was increased to 100 mg by the third week then 150 mg by the fifth. After 6 weeks, all patients showed significant improvement in mood. 10 however, showed a variety of side effects like dry mouth, muscle twitching and numbness and dizziness. No complications occurred.

Trazodon is sold in pharmacies and online drug stores. Verification of online drug stores is important to ensure that the product is authentic and safe. The drug comes in the form of tablets.

Trazodon and MAO inhibitors have yet to show a synergistic effect so they should not be taken concurrently. Treatment should start with low initial doses slowly increasing to 300 mg among ambulatory patients and 600 mg to hospitalized ones daily. 50 mg of Trazodon is enough as sleep aid.

Trazodon has the following structural formula:
