Tibolone is a manmade hormone-type medication that is used largely for hormone replacement therapy in women suffering from post-menopausal symptoms. To be clear, it is not to be used as an oral contraceptive. This synthetic steroid imitates the activity of the female sex hormone estrogen, progesterone, and the androgen testosterone. It also assists in restoring the stability of hormones in a patient's body, especially estrogen.
Tibolone is typically given at a dosage of one mu g/kg to ten mg/kg—for instance, five mu g/kg to five mg/kg—regardless of the route of administration. It should also be swallowed whole, without chewing, by drinking water or some other drink. It is best taken at the same time each day for maximum therapeutic effect.
During your treatment, expect your doctor to perform regular checkups on you. Do not fail to attend these appointments, because they are important in evaluating whether your current dosage of tibolone is helping you out or not.
Before taking this drug, make sure that your pharmacist or doctor knows if you're going to be pregnant, plan to be pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Also inform your doctor if your family has a history of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, vaginal bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia, liver problems, venous thromboebolism (pulmonary embolism or blood clot in the lungs and blood clot in the leg), angina, myocardial infarction, stroke or mini-stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus or high blood sugar, porphyria, migraine, headache, epilepsy, gallstones, asthma, otosclerosis, systemic lupus, and erythematosus.
As for missed doses, it should be taken as soon as you remember, unless it's been more than a half day or twelve hours late. If it's already time for the next dose, then the missed dose should be skipped and the regular dose should be taken at the normal time. There's no need to double up your dose or take an extra dose to make up for your missed dose.
On that note, never take more than the directed dose of this drug. If you believe that you or someone else has taken an overdose of tibolone, go to the accident and emergency department of your nearest hospital at once. Always take the container of the drug you've overdosed on with you if possible, even if it is empty.
Like many other drugs similar to it, tibolone also has unwanted side effects that usually disappear as your body adjusts to the treatment, which includes headache, rash, itching, drowsiness, and slight nausea. If any of these side effects persist, speak with your doctor or pharmacist immediately before any of them becomes too severe to treat.
More to the point, if you get a headache while under tibolone treatment, ask your pharmacist to recommend a suitable painkiller to counteract it. Also confirm if your reactions are normal before operating heavy machinery, driving, or doing most anything that requires alertness and full concentration.
Call your doctor as soon as you can if you notice a sudden pain in your chest, an excruciating swelling of one or both of your legs, the yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, or shortness of breath. On that note, if you are a woman, you should report any changes in your breasts while undergoing treatment to your doctor.
