Soriatane is a medication that is considered a second-generation retinoid and can be taken orally by those suffering from a severe skin illness. This medication is capable of controlling and treating the effects of skin illness.
Soriatane is distributed under the trade name Acitretin and is used primarily in treating psoriasis patients. Psoriasis is a type of severe skin illness that greatly affects the physical appearance of the skin.
This medication is categorized as least toxic systemic that can treat psoriasis. It comes in the form of a capsule and is taken orally.
Soriatane works by helping the skin develop normally. The medication has long-term effectiveness but needs to be taken regularly in order to maintain the skin's healing progress.
The recommended dose for adult patients with severe psoriasis is 25 to 50mg per day. The doctor may increase the dose after four weeks of medication depending on the patient's progress.
Other skin illnesses such as keratosis follicularis, and bullous may require up to a 25mg dose per day.
It is recommended that the patient take the medicine after meals so as to avoid the effect of the medicine on an empty stomach.
Dosage may be altered by the doctor based on the effectiveness of the medication and the condition of the patient.

The most common side effects include emesis, headache, back pain, arthralgia, decrease in hearing, sensitivity to pain, skin redness, insomnia, and myalgia.

Since one of the side effects affects the vision, it is recommended that you avoid driving and any extreme activities while taking this medication.

The birth control should continue a minimum of two years after the patient takes their last dose of Soriatane.
Individuals using Soriatane are advised not to donate blood to anyone for two to three years after ending medication. It is also recommended to avoid alcoholic drinks during and after treatment.
Additionally, patients should avoid extended exposure to cold weather, sunlight and wind because the skin can easily be irritated as a result of medication.
