Rhinocort Aqua may also be prescribed as Rhinocort nasal spray, Rhinocort turbuhaler, and Rhinalar, and is considered part of the corticosteroid family. Rhinocort Aqua is a steroidal, anti-inflammatory medication commonly used to treat the symptoms of hay fever, allergies, or other nasal problems such as stuffy nose, nasal congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, irritation, discomfort, eye itch, chronic sneezing, post nasal drip, and other allergy or nasal symptoms. Rhinocort Aqua is often used to prevent the return of nasal polyps following surgical removal as well.
A medical history should be readily assessed prior to prescribing this medication to a patient, as it should not be prescribed universally. Patients with medical histories which include previous allergic reactions to corticosteroids, asthma, type 2 diabetes, glaucoma, herpes infections of the eye, recent injury to the nose or face, infections, recent nasal surgery, under active thyroid, tuberculosis, liver disease, recent heart attack, heart problems, or amebiasis should not be prescribed Rhinocort Aqua as it may make symptoms of these conditions worse or it may mask the symptoms of these conditions, causing harm without the patient’s knowledge.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated Rhinocort Aqua as a pregnancy risk category B. Rhinocort Aqua is not expected to cause either harm or birth defects in unborn babies. Rhinocort Aqua is likely to pass into the mother’s breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing Rhinocort Aqua to women who are nursing and should proceed with the utmost caution if prescribing to pregnant women. Pregnant women who require nasal corticosteroids should be prescribed nasally inhaled medications over injected medications or medications taken orally.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Rhinocort Aqua, and some may be severe. If a patient is experiencing an allergic reaction or a serious side effect, professional and immediate medical attention should be sought. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms such as facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects may include symptoms such as bloody mucous, unexplained nosebleeds, a foul smell, blurry vision, gradual loss of vision, continuous burning or stinging after use, crusting, white patches in the nose, sores inside the nasal cavity, eye discharge, eye pain, headache, hives, lightheadedness, dizziness, loss of taste, loss of smell, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, shortness of breath, tightness in chest, trouble breathing, unusual fatigue or sleepiness, wheezing, or white patches in the throat.
Less serious side effects generally don’t require immediate emergency medical attention but should ultimately be reported to the prescribing physician. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a more tolerable level by reducing the dosage of the medication. Less serious side effects of Rhinocort Aqua may include symptoms such as burning of the nostrils for a short period, short term irritation, dryness, an increase in the frequency of sneezing, or an irritation or itching of the throat.
Rhinocort Aqua should be taken as directed and should not be taken twice to make up for a missed dose. A missed dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, in which case the missed dose should be skipped. Taking too much of this medication may result in an overdose. If an overdose is suspected the patient should be taken to the nearest emergency medical care. Symptoms of an overdose are likely to include blurry vision, high blood pressure, increased urination, and excessive thirst. Symptoms of long term overdosing include acne, bone fracture, excessive hair growth in women, rounding of the face and neck, impotence in men, lack of or changes in menstruation, or muscle wasting.
Rhinocort Aqua may interact with other medications including but not limited to ephedrine, phenobarbitol, or rifampin. Patients should be urged to check with their prescribing physician before taking any medications that are not previously prescribed, including over the counter medications and herbal supplements.
