  Prazosin

Prazosin

Prazosin review by Medicalook.com

People suffering from high blood pressure and other heart problems can now take Prazosin to help relieve their condition. Find out possible interactions with other drugs and possible side effects.

Prazosin is the generic name of the drug belonging to a drug class known as alpha-adrenergic blockers. It also comes under the brand names Hypovase, Minipress and Vasoflex which generally treats high blood pressure or hypertension. The drug has a vasodilating effect thereby relaxing blood vessels to improve blood and oxygen flow. Prazosin is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH which is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, pheochromocytoma or a tumor in the adrenal gland, congestive heart failure and Raynaud’s Disease. The medication comes in the form of capsules which should be taken by mouth.

Prazosin can cause a variety of side effects such as weakness, tiredness, headache, nausea, hives, rash, itching, difficulty breathing, chest pain, painful erection of the penis that can last for several hours, fast pounding heartbeat and arrhythmia. Uncommon symptoms may occur as well like vivid dreams, dizziness or drowsiness, weakness, ill feeling, increased urination, joint or muscle pain, decreased sex drive, irritability, depression, fluid retention, slight weight gain, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, decreased appetite and numbness or tingling sensation in the extremities. Overdose can occur as evidenced by decreased reflexes, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness and fainting.

Contraindications to Prazosin include allergic reaction to the drug, doxazosin, alfuzosin and terazosin. Those taking other drugs like proppranolol, sildenafil, tadalafil and antihypertensives, herbal products and supplements should inform their doctor first before consumption of Prazosin. Underlying conditions should be indicated like narcolepsy, prostate cancer, liver disease, pregnancy, lactation, orthostatic hypertension and syncope. Individuals who are about to undergo surgery including dental surgery should inform their doctor first before taking Prazosin.

Prazosin acts selectively on alpha-1 receptors thereby causing reduced effect compared to other less selective alpha blockers that can block presynaptic alpha-2 receptors. It then cannot prevent inhibition of norepinephrine release. Cardiac output is improved by uninhibited norepinephrine release through the baroreflex response that spurs increased reflex tachycardia. As the receptors are inhibited, vasodilation of arterioles and veins occurs boosting blood flow and lowering blood pressure.

28 hypertensive patients were included in a clinical study wherein they were divided into two groups. The first group was given 6 mg of Prazosin a day in 3 divided doses while the rest were placed on a placebo for a period of 6 weeks. By the end of the 3rd week, the Prazosin group showed significant improvement in their blood pressure while there were no changes seen in the placebo group.

The drug is readily available in most pharmacies, clinics and online pharmacies. Make sure you only get fresh and quality products by reading the label and expiry date carefully and checking that the source is legitimate, certified and truly has an existing address and contact number.

Avoid engaging in high-risk activities like driving and handling heavy duty machinery until the full effects of Prazosin is known. Monitor your blood pressure regularly to assess how you respond to the drug. Make a written list of all medicines and products you’re currently taking to consider any possible interaction. Store the medication in a tightly sealed container away from moisture, sunlight and other people’s reach.
