Pimozide

Pimozide review by Medicalook.com

Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders can be managed easily with the proper medication treatment. Although drugs created for this purpose are usually not sufficient in curing the problem completely, they can help greatly in keeping a patient’s life as normal as possible.

In any case, a drug’s positive effects must always be greater than its possible risks. An antipsychotic drug developed in early 1960s, the Pimozide, is rarely prescribed for such reasons. The use of Pimozide has been clinically found to cause severe side effects. That is why it is only given to patients as a last resort after other medical means have been tried but did not work.

Pimozide is an antipsychotic medicine marketed under the brand name Orap by Janssen Pharmaceutica. Aside from Schizophrenia, Pimozide is also prescribed for treatment of chronic psychosis and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Before use of Pimozide or any other drug for that matter, the safety of the patient must be ensured. This is done with proper and accurate diagnosis, which is needed to receive a correct prescription. Some medical conditions show off similar symptoms and it is up to your physician to require tests that will confirm his findings. This is not as hard today when updated technology created a whole bunch of options for proper diagnosis to be obtained.

Aside from knowing whether the drug is right for the illness or not, your doctor would also look through your current health condition. Factors that may affect the efficiency and safety of Pimozide in your case must also be established. Pimozide is contraindicated and used cautiously under certain circumstances. A possible allergic reaction to the drug needs to be settled first and foremost. Hypersensitivity, which may create an adverse reaction with Pimozide use, is one contraindication.

Doctors must also determine your history of depression, anxiety, severe intoxication with alcohol and other substances, and Parkinson’s disease before giving a go on a Pimozide treatment. Young adults below 18 years old are not advised to use this medicine. Pimozide may cause severe side effects in such cases. As part of the precautionary measure, your doctor may give you an adjusted dose or a different drug altogether with the presence of any of the above circumstances.

Pimozide is an oral drug that is taken by mouth in tablet form. The standard dose is one to two tablets every day. You must take your dosage at around the same time every day to avoid missing it. If you happen to miss a dose, you can take it for as long as it is not almost the time for your next dose. Otherwise, it is better to skip one dose than to take a double dose.

The side effects of Pimozide may be mild or severe, depending on your current health condition and your body’s responses to it. Usually, drug side effects are mild and temporary. They go away as soon as your body becomes adjusted to the medicine. There are some cases, however, that need prompt medical attention. Rapid heartbeat, restlessness, confusion, and the like that comes with high fever are the warning signs for Pimozide.
