  Patanol

Patanol

Patanol review by Medicalook.com

Patanol, which is generically prescribed as olopatadine ophthalmic, is commonly used to treat allergy symptoms as it relates to the eyes. It is an antihistamine that treats watery eyes, itchy or burning eyes, and inflammation of the eyes caused by allergic reactions.

Patanol is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing Patanol. Patients with a medical history which includes bacterial infections of the eye, viral infections of the eye, or fungal infections of the eye should not take Patanol. This medication should not be used in children under the age of three years old.

The American Food and Drug Administration has rated Patanol as a category C pregnancy risk which means that it has yet to be determined whether Patanol will cause harm or birth defects to an unborn baby. It has yet to be determined whether Patanol will pass through the mother’s breast milk and affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to a pregnant or nursing woman.

Patanol comes with a risk of side effects, some of which are severe. A patient experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms such as facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require emergency medical treatment includes serious vision problems that can not be controlled.

Other less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical care but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as swollen eyelids, burning, stinging, irritation, itching, redness, or dryness of the eyes, stuffy nose, runny nose, headaches, changes in taste, or loss of smell. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Patanol.

Patanol should be taken exactly as directed by the physician. If the patient misses a dose, the dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to prevent the potential for an overdose. The patient should never take a double dose of this medication. Though an overdose is unlikely, if an overdose is suspected the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose will present with symptoms that include severe burning of the eyes, severe headaches, and difficulty focusing. If the medication has been ingested, which can be avoided by keeping this medication out of reach of children, the patient should be taken directly to the emergency room. An ingestion overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

There is a risk of negative drug interactions associated with Patanol. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing Patanol. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medication, including over the counter medication and herbal remedies. Medications that have a known negative interactions include other eye medications and additional antihistamines.

Patients should be instructed to wait at least fifteen minutes before returning their contact lenses to their eyes after using Patanol. To prevent infection or scratching of the eye, the patient should keep the dropper tip clean and prevent the dropper tip from touching any surfaces. The dropper tip should not be touched with the hands or fingertips.
