Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant drug. It is used mainly to control the frequency and severity of seizures in patients with epilepsy. Oxcarbazepine is marketed under the trade names Trexapin by Taro and Trileptal by Novartis. Since 2007, Oxcarbazepine has also been made available in generic versions by United States manufacturers. Oxcarbazepine is found as the most efficient drug to reduce anxiety and stabilize mood with milder side effects.
The Food and Drug Administration or FDA released a warning against drugs of similar formulations as Oxcarbazepine. They have been linked to an increased risk for suicidality. As a result, the FDA advised healthcare providers to keep a close watch on their patients during Oxcarbazepine therapy, especially at the early stage of treatment.
Oxcarbazepine is a prescription medicine. You cannot avail of it without the supervision of a qualified professional. It is also important to consult your doctor first before starting on an Oxcarbazepine treatment for your safety. Patients who might develop allergic reactions against Oxcarbazepine or its components are contraindicated to use this drug. Those who have had kidney or liver problems, meanwhile, may be administered with an adjusted dose.
Pregnancy and lactation are two important concerns related to the use of this medicine. If you happen to miss a dose, you must take it only if it is not too close to your next dosing schedule. That being the case, it would be much better to skip a dose than doubling it.
As with any drugs, Oxcarbazepine causes side effects. The symptoms, however, should not spell utter physical discomfort. The benefits of the drug should be greater than the adverse effects otherwise there is no sense in using the drug altogether.
Oxcarbazepine can make you feel drowsy and dizzy. It is highly recommended that you stop taking alcohol while under treatment. Alcohol would worsen your symptom of drowsiness.
The side effects of Oxcarbazepine ideally go away as soon as your body becomes accustomed to the drug. At the start of treatment, you may expect vision changes, diarrhea, heartburn, appetite loss, dry mouth, coordination difficulty, nervousness, mood swing, and hot flashes among others. If your symptoms persist, become unmanageable, or came with more frequent and more severe seizures, fever, rash, chest pain, and unusual bleeding, call your doctor immediately. Ideally, you must be under a doctor’s supervision during Oxcarbazepine treatment to monitor your responses and your improvements with the drug.
