  Ondansetron

Ondansetron

Ondansetron review by Medical-look.com

Ondansetron is an antiemetic drug used by cancer patients to help relieve the symptoms of nausea and vomiting as adverse effects of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy sessions. Its mechanism of action is focused on both the peripheral and central nerves.

Currently, Ondansetron is marketed under the brand names Zofran by GlaxoSmithKline, Emeset by Cipla Ltd., Emodan by Korea United Pharmaceuticals, Emetron by Gedeon Richter Ltd., and Ondemet by Zentiva A.S. Baxter Healthcare has also recently received an approval to market its own brand of Ondansetron drug in injectable form.

Ondansetron is available in different forms and suspensions. It has a regular tablet, disintegrating tablet, and liquid solution forms. Ondansetron is usually prescribed to be taken at least half an hour before chemotherapy, an hour before surgery, and one to two hours before radiation therapy. Additional doses may be required depending on the patient’s bodily reactions to the treatment.

Before taking an Ondansetron prescription, you must go through a series of tests and physical examinations to ensure that you are safe with the drug. Allergy to Ondansetron and to other drugs as well as pregnancy must be ruled out. Ondansetron is also contraindicated to patients with severe liver damage.

Ondansetron must be taken directly as prescribed. This is important to keep the drug working its primary purpose. If you missed taking Ondansetron on the scheduled dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, taking it close to the next dose is not advised. Overdose may cause adverse reactions characterized by utter physical discomfort at the very least.

Ondansetron comes with side effects of its own. Since such symptoms are quite small compared to the benefits of the drug, doctors keep on prescribing it. Patients under Ondansetron treatment may experience mild episodes of diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, headache, and tiredness. They are but normal and should go away once the body becomes accustomed to Ondansetron. Bouts with wheezing, shortness of breath, fever, irregular heartbeat, and chest pain, meanwhile, are alarming. You must call your doctor immediately at the appearance of such symptoms before they become life-threatening.

In recent years, Ondansetron is also being studied as a possible treatment for schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, and alcoholism. Ondansetron is found to be effective in reducing the negative symptoms of schizophrenia when used in combination with haloperidol. It is also found to be significant in treating psychosis which could lead to the development of Parkinson’s disease. Ondansetron is also found to cause a reduced craving for alcohol and could be a reliable cure for alcoholics. Although these studies have not been finalized, clinical tests showed the value of Ondansetron in the treatment.

Ondansetron is an effective medicine that has been found with greater benefits and very mild adverse effects. It has also been found to cause very little risk for drug interactions when used alongside other drugs. As result, it has been prescribed by many doctors worldwide. The most commonly used and the most popular form of Ondansetron is Zofran, which is a regular tablet.

Ondansetron has the following structural formula:
