Olmesartan medoxomil review
|
Olmesartan medoxomil, which is also known by its more popular name of Benicar, is a drug that manages high blood pressure. It's mechanism of action involves blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a hormone that prompts the blood vessels to constrict and cause a person's blood pressure to rise up. Olmesartan medoxomil expands and relaxes the blood vessels in order to reduce the intensity of blood pressure.
Olmesartan medoxomil is given to people with high blood pressure problems. You must take either of its two trademarked forms—Benicar or Benicar HCT—regularly in order to enjoy its full benefits. Keep in mind that it may take a couple of weeks before you can get significant results out of this drug because blood pressure normally declines in a gradual pace, so you must continue taking it even if you already feel well and the adverse symptoms of your condition has already disappeared.
Dosage depends on the individual, so there's no specific recommended daily dose, although the starting dose typically commences at twenty milligrams every day when used as monotherapy for patients who aren't volume contracted. As for people who require a more significant drop in blood pressure after half a month (two weeks) of treatment, the olmesartan medoxomil dose may be increased to up to forty milligrams, because doses above that number don't have any greater effect. Also, twice-daily dosage is no better than the same total dose once everyday.
At present, the elderly and sufferers with moderate to marked hepatic dysfunction or impaired renal function have no recommended initial dosage adjustment. As for patients with possible decrease of intravascular volume—that is, those under diuretic therapy, particularly the ones with renal impairment—olmesartan medoxomil should probably be taken on a lower starting dose and commenced while under close supervision of a healthcare specialist.
The most typical olmesartan medoxomil side effect is dizziness, which happens in up to three percent of those treated. Studies have found that dizziness appears more often in people who take the drug compared to those who haven't. No other significant side effects have been found in more than one percent of test subjects under olmesartan medoxomil therapy.
There are also some rarer side effects that should be quickly reported to your doctor or pharmacist lest they become serious or fatal: decrease in the amount of urine produced, fainting spells, lightheadedness, difficulty in swallowing or breathing, wheezing, inexplicable swelling of the neck/face/lips/tongue/throat/head, itching, and skin rash.
Tell your doctor as soon as possible of any prescription or nonprescription (OTC or otherwise) medication you have recently taken or are already taking. Furthermore, you must not start or stop your olmesartan medoxomil therapy without prior pharmaceutical or medical approval. You should inform your healthcare specialist without delay if you have allergies or illnesses before beginning treatment.
More importantly, don't take either propriety version of olmesartan medoxomil (Benicar or Benicar HCT) if you're an expecting mother. Avoid this medication if you have any urinary conditions, particularly those that cause difficulty in urination. You should also avoid drugs that can cause you an allergic reaction. If you're known to have any allergies with sulfa drugs like trimethoprim or sulfamethoxazole, then don't take this medicine. This drug may be prescribed alone or with other diuretics. Consult your doctor for more information regarding this drug.
