Olanzapine is an antipsychotic drug used by many patients of several mental disorders. It can treat episodes of manic depressions efficiently. Olanzapine works by interfering in the activity of the natural substances occurring in the brain to maintain a mental balance. It is mostly used to treat patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Olanzapine is marketed under the brand names Zyprexa or Zyprexa Zydis by Elli Lilly and Company, a global pharmaceutical business located at Indiana in the United States.
Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic. Just recently, FDA proposed that the warning label of medicines under the similar class be altered. FDA especially ruled out the increased risk of suicide among young patients, 24 years and below, is included.
FDA also counters the use of Olanzapine in patients aged 65 ad above who are suffering from dementia. Clinical data showed that the medication treatment has a high percentage of mortality in such a case. Olanzapine can cause stroke in older adults during treatment. If you or anyone you know is beyond 65 years old, inflicted with dementia, and is prescribed with Olanzapine, do not follow the doctor’s directions and instead call the attention of FDA. The agency does not approve of that use due to the known risks. Some signs that a patient is potentially suffering from stroke due to Olanzapine include numbness of arms and legs, weakness, fainting, dizziness, and difficulty speaking.
Aside from dementia, Olanzapine is also contraindicated for a number of factors. One of them is allergy to the drug and to its many components. If you have existing allergies to other drugs, you must tell your doctor about it as well. You must also keep your doctor posted on the prescription and over-the-counter drugs that you are using. Some drugs create an adverse reaction with another.
Olanzapine is also used carefully in patients who had a stroke, an addictive take on street drugs, a heart attack, an irregular heartbeat, a seizure, an abnormal blood pressure, and other medical conditions. Some of those cases require dosage adjustment while others prohibit the use of Olanzapine altogether.
Olanzapine must be handled carefully in pregnant and lactating patients as well. The doctor must ensure that the benefits of the drug overpower its possible risks to the pregnant or lactating woman and her child.
Olanzapine is an oral drug. It comes in tablet and disintegrating wafers. Olanzapine is available in 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg tablets.
