Naltrexone is a drug used to treat addiction to alcohol and street drugs such as heroin and many more. This drug is only given to those who have stopped using such substances and should not be given to people who are still using street drugs or alcohol.

Naltrexone is prescribed to people who have stopped using street drugs or alcohol. This drug works by eliminating the craving for such addictive substances. It also blocks the effects of opoid street drugs. Naltrexone is only part of a complete rehabilitation program that includes counseling and social support. Naltrexone is being distributed under the brand name ReVia.

Naltrexone comes in a form of a tablet that can be taken orally. This drug is usually administered under the supervision of a doctor or in a hospital. But sometimes doctors may allow patients to take the drug at home. The normal dose for this drug is 1 tablet a day with or without food. Make sure to follow the instructions of your doctor. Do not attempt to increase or decrease the dosage without the doctor’s advice. Excessive use of Naltrexone may cause severe liver problems.

Some patients using Naltrexone may experience side effects. The most common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, tearfulness, anxiety, constipation, nervousness, irritability, drowsiness, rash, muscle pain, and difficulty in sleeping.

There are also serious side effects that may occur to some patients. This includes blurred vision, confusion, diarrhea, vomiting and hallucination. It is important to immediately inform your doctor if you experience any of the side effects.

Before using this drug, inform your doctor if you have liver problems, hepatitis or other health problems. You must also tell your doctor if you have any allergies with the drug. It is important to tell your doctor all prescribed and non-prescribed drugs you are using including herbal products.

This includes attending counseling, education programs, support group sessions and other treatments needed. It is also best not to take any alcohol, drugs or similar substances while under treatment. Using higher dose of street drugs while using Naltrexone will cause serious health condition such as coma or even death.

You must continue using this medication even if you feel that you no longer need it. Stopping the medication earlier than required may hamper the treatment and will only prolong the process.
