  Nabumetone

Nabumetone

Nabumetone review by Medical-look.com

Nabumetone is one potent NSAID that can treat arthritic pain and poses lower risk for GI side effects. Individuals still need to be cautious since the benefits also come with relative consequences.

Nabumetone is the generic name of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID which also comes under the brand name Relafen and Relifex. It is generally used to treat pain and inflammation caused by a variety of conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual cramps and injury. The drug is non-narcotic and relieves mild to moderate pain experiences wherein patient responses may vary. It belongs to the arylalkanoic acid family and commercially made available by Meda.

The medication acts by reducing the hormones responsible for pain and swelling reactions. Compared to other NSAIDs, Nabumetone poses a lower risk of gastrointestinal side effects. It can also effectively alleviate fever associated with muscle pain and stiffness. The drug comes in the form of tablets which are taken orally once or twice daily with or without food. It is also known for its convenient once daily dosing.

As an NSAID, Nabumetone can cause side effects like intestinal or stomach bleeding, ulcer or perforation anytime during treatment. This is a serious condition that can be fatal if left untreated. Patients should immediately seek medical attention if they experience stomach pain, vomiting blood, passing bloody or black tarry stools and heartburn. Other side effects include diarrhea, constipation, abdominal bloating, flatulence, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, mouth sores, nervousness, insomnia, profuse sweating and ringing in the ears.

Serious symptoms include sudden weight gain, jaundice, lack of energy, fever, blisters, itching, hives, rash, flu-like symptoms, upset stomach, loss of appetite, upper right quadrant abdominal pain, eye, extremity, tongue, throat, lip or facial swelling, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness of voice, back pain, cloudy or bloody urine, painful urination and fast heartbeat. It is also possible to have Nabumetone overdose as evidenced by seizures, vomiting, upset stomach, drowsiness and coma.

Contraindications for Nabumetone include individuals with blood disorders, eye disease, ulcers, heart problems, alcohol use, high blood pressure and hypersensitivity reactions to the drug. People should be cautious when taking the drug especially if they have a history of liver or kidney disease, nasal polyps, asthma, pregnant or breast-feeding. Elderly individuals should also take the drug with caution. It is also contraindicated among post-CABG or coronary artery bypass graft surgery patients.

The main action of Nabumetone is not fully known just like other NSAIDs. However, it is thought to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis producing reduced pain and inflammation since its parent compound is a prodrug. The compound undergoes hepatic biotransformation to 6-methoxy-2-naphthylacetic acid or 6MNA which is an active component that blocks the chemical, prostaglandin.

Double-blind controlled trials were conducted involving 1,047 patients suffering from osteoarthritis provided with 1000 mg of Nabumetone per day from 6 weeks to 6 months. Another controlled trial involved 770 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis provided with 1000 mg of Nabumetone per day from 3 weeks to 6 months. Both groups of individuals showed significant relief of symptoms proving the efficacy of the drug.

The drug is readily available in clinics, pharmacies and online drugstores. Verify online sources that they have an existing address and check the label to ensure freshness and quality. To make sure that you’re getting legitimate products, look for certification or a valid seal.

Take Nabumetone only in the recommended amount. Never take more or double the dose if you miss to prevent overdose. Store the medication in a tightly sealed container away from moisture, sunlight and children’s reach. Your doctor may begin with lower dosages then gradually increasing over time.
