The drug mometasone is classified as a glucorticoid steroid. Its full name is moetasone furoate.
Glucocorticoids belong to a class of steroid hormones that bind to glucocorticoid receptors in most vertebrate animal cells. Glucocorticoids are part of the immune system’s feedback mechanisms that turn immune activity down, in the body’s case during inflammation.
Mometasone is marketed under the brand name Elocon. This is a medium potency corticosteroid which is used to relieve inflammatory and pruritic manifestations dermatoses which are responding to corticosteroids.
Mometasone cream is available in tubes containing 0.1% of mometasone. It is administered topically by applying a thin amount of the cream in the affected areas.
General side effects of the use of mometasone are reported to be side effects found in the skin. Such skin conditions range from burning, rosacea, skin atrophy, and allergic reactions in the application sites. Other side effects include acne form and eruptions, hypopigmentation, folliculitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and hypertrichosis.
Mometasone is contraindicated for patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components.
The drug should not be administered on an open wound, as systemic absorption of mometasone may produce reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression. With systemic absorption of the drug, certain conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome, hyperglycemia and glucosuria may manifest.
Most systemically administered corticosteroids appear in human milk and are found to suppress growth and interfere with corticosteroid production. Hence, the use of the drug on breastfeeding women should always be consulted to the physician. The use of the drug should only be used when the potential benefits outweigh the risk to the child.
Although no studies show that harm may be brought about by use of the drug in pediatric patients, the use of the drug in pediatric patients is highly not recommended.
