Micronyl, a medicament used to treat bronchial asthma and a range of respiratory problems related to nasal problems, is a glucocorticoid steroid that interacts with hydrocortisone or cortisol, the two chemicals naturally produced by the body via the adrenal glands. Its main effect is that of an anti-inflammatory, which lessens the possible reaction of the airways prior to asthma attacks. This causes a retardation of the initial hypersensitivity of the main airways, preventing spasms and allowing air to pass more easily for proper respiration.
Micronyl should not be given during an asthma attack but as a preventive measure for future asthma attacks.
Micronyl is for patients with hypersensitivity attacks that entail constricting of airways. It is also for patients with allergic reactions that lead to the same constriction pattern. Micronyl is used to treat long-term ailments associated with asthma and is recommended for patients having difficulty breathing at night or those with paroxysmal nocturnal asthma attacks.
This medicament is not for patients suffering from acute attacks of asthma. Usually, this medicament is given to patients who are six years of age and older. The immediate effects of the medicament may be seen as early as 24 hours after initial dose, while full effects will be significantly seen within 1 to 2 weeks.
For adults, the typical dose is 1 to 4 puffs, two times a day. For children, the dose is typically halved, with 1 to 2 puffs, twice per day. There are some instances where physicians will use this medicament to treat mild asthma. The number of puffs would still be based on the age of the patient, but the frequency per day would be halved.
Some side effects include a mild cough or wheezing. A bronchodilator such as Ventolin, or any albuterol medicament usually counteracts this side effect. This counter medicament is taken prior to taking Micronyl to prevent the side effect.
Sometimes, oral thrush may thrive. The statistics are about 1 in every 25 patients, but is considered to be due to either a weakened immune system or improper hygiene, especially in between puffs.
A long-term side effect is a change or decrease in the calcium and bone formation of patients, which may cause osteoporosis.
Micronyl's interaction with other medicaments is minimal, except for those using Ketoconazole. It is documented that when Ketoconazole is in the body, there is an increase in the amount of retained Micronyl, which may account for the increased chance of a side effect. General precautions should be given to those who are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or become pregnant during treatment.
