Mianserin belongs to the group of TCA drugs providing an answer to depression and mania. There are also other viable uses of the drug aside from its versatile effects on neurotransmitters. People need to be more cautious about the hazards and actions of the antidepressant.
Mianserin is a tetracyclic antidepressant drug so it belongs to the TCA group of drugs. Its generic name is mianserin hydrochloride and also works as an antihistamine and hypnosedative. Mianserin has no anticholinergic effect however. It greatly stimulates norepinephrine production and inhibits norepinephrine reuptake at a small degree. In the central nervous system, the drug was discovered to also have interactions with serotonin receptors.
Generally, mianserin is taken by individuals suffering from depressive illness. It helps improve mood and provides an overall sense of well-being. Mianserin is available internationally in tablets which are taken orally. The tablets should be swallowed whole rather than chewed or crushed to minimize side effects. The drug causes the increase and decrease of brain chemicals to elevate mood.
Mianserin has many side effects that people should observe for. Drowsiness, dizziness, postural hypotension, joint pain or arthralgia, excessive fluid retention in tissues, edema, skin rash, sweating, tremor, liver function disturbances, jaundice, abnormal blood cell count, change in sexual desire and performance, breast milk production, breast enlargement and tenderness, seizures and convulsions are some known side effects that may manifest. Any of these should immediately be reported.
The TCA drug is contraindicated among the elderly, individuals with decreased liver or kidney function, people with heart disease or heart block or who recently had a heart attack, those with prostatic hypertrophy, those with closed angle glaucoma, those with a history of epilepsy or at risk of seizures, those taking special medications known to interact with mianserin, diabetic patients, schizophrenic patients, people suffering from manic depression, people receiving ECT, people with blood disorders, children under 18 years old, breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women.
Mianserin blocks inhibitory a2-autoreceptors on noradrenergic nerves. This action increases the amount of noradrenaline in the synaptic cleft which may lead to aplastic anemia or agranuloocytosis. Neurotransmitters in the brain normally function as chemical messengers between nerve cells. Serotonin and noradrenaline are neurotransmitters that help lighten mood so mianserin aims to help reabsorb these back into brain nerve cells. Some receptors that bind these neurotransmitters are also blocked by the drug so that the total amount of noradrenaline and serotonin is high.
A group of 60 individuals consisting of 40 diagnosed with depression and 20 diagnosed with manic disorder were given 1 tablet of mianserin for 12 weeks. The tablets were taken together with a full glass of water an hour before meals. After 12 weeks, all patients presented an improvement in mood by as much as 30%. The depressed patients exhibited a more positive attitude while those with mania were more cooperative and had better focus.
Mianserin is available in tablet form internationally and can be bought with a doctor’s prescription. Only buy at legitimate pharmacies and clinics. Check the date for expiry and make sure that the drug is FDA approved and certified.
Mianserin should not be taken as a sleeping drug. It may take about two weeks before results start to manifest. If a person misses one dose, take as soon as possible but never double the amount. After 8 weeks, individuals may experience mild withdrawal symptoms if they stop taking suddenly. Withdraw gradually with the aid of a doctor by reducing the dose every few weeks as prescribed.
