Metaxalone is a type of muscle relaxant that can relieve pain from ailments like sprains and strains. It is recognized as a strong type of muscle relaxant with a relatively minimal incidence of serious side effects.
Metaxalone is known under the brand name of Skelaxin. It is recommended to adults who have musculoskeletal problems like strains and sprains.
Metaxalone is taken orally usually 3-4 times in a day, or as indicated by a doctor. Metaxalone can be taken on an empty stomach or after intake of meals in order to lessen the risks of upset stomach. Some of the more serious but less unlikely to happen side effects of this medication include fever, persistent sore throat, changes in mood, yellowing of the eyes or the skin, unexplained tiredness, irregular heartbeat, problems in urination, and seizures.
There is an unlikely chance that this medication can result to serious allergic reaction, although patients should immediately get medical help if they experience signs of allergic reaction like itching, swelling, rashes, and difficulty in breathing.
Patients should tell their doctors or pharmacists of any drugs they are using, whether prescription or over-the-counter types, especially those medications that can result to drowsiness like diphenhydramine, diazepam, carbamazepine, sedatives, codeine, and amitriptyline.
Patients should also divulge their history of allergies before agreeing to use this medication. Metaxalone should never be used by those who have certain medical conditions like severe liver and kidney disease. Those who have a history of low blood cell count such as anemia can also be prone to a drug reaction when they use this medication.
Patients should also tell their doctors of their medical history like seizures and urinary retention before taking this medication.
Metaxalone can cause users to become dizzy or drowsy so users of this medication should be wary when driving or operating equipment. Limited alcohol intake is also a priority for those who take this medication. This medication should also not be prescribed to pregnant women unless direly needed.
