  Meclizine

Meclizine

Meclizine review by Medicalook.com

Meclizine is a drug that inhibits the function of an enzyme called histamine. As such, Meclizine falls under the category of drugs called antihistamine.

Meclizine is typically prescribed for conditions symptomatic of motion sickness. This includes nausea, dizziness and vomiting. It is also possible for Meclizine to address vertigo. Vertigo is a condition in which the person feels as if he is spinning or swaying even though he is not moving and is standing on solid ground. Vertigo is commonly linked to the balance mechanisms inside the inner ear. In order to prevent symptoms of motion sickness, Meclizine should be taken one hour before traveling. This ensures that Meclizine will prevent the symptoms that may come as a result of the motion of the vehicle the person is on. The Meclizine tablet can be chewed, crushed or swallowed whole. For better absorption, drink a full glass of water after taking Meclizine.

Even though Meclizine is a rather basic drug, it is still best that you talk to your healthcare professional before using it. Inform your doctor of your current medical situation. If you have lung diseases or any other lung problem, inform your doctor. If you have eye problems such as glaucoma, do inform your doctor as well. Problems with urinating as well as constipation also need to be reported. Doing this will help your doctor decide whether Meclizine is a safe treatment for your motion sickness. This way, you will be able to prevent further complications that may come as a result of using Meclizine.

Furthermore, Meclizine cannot be given to children under 12 years of age. If a child is experiencing symptoms of motion sickness, contact your doctor and ask for an alternative prescription.

Meanwhile, pregnant women can take Meclizine. Since Meclizine is placed under Pregnancy Category B of the Food and Drug Administration, it has been approved as safe for the development of the fetus. However, Meclizine’s effects on breast milk have yet to be confirmed. As such, do consult your health care provider regarding Meclizine intake and breastfeeding.

Once you take Meclizine, be on alert for symptoms of an allergic reaction. If rashes start appearing along with swelling in the face as well difficulty in breathing, stop taking Meclizine. Contact your doctor immediately in order to address your situation.

Also, Meclizine may cause some minor side effects. These may include a dry mouth, nervousness, and constipation. Meclizine may also give the person some difficulty in sleeping.

Meclizine also has the tendency of magnifying the effects of other drugs that have a drowsing effect. As such, be careful about taking Meclizine when you are already taking anti-depressants, sedatives, pain relievers and anxiety medication. As usual, do inform your physician about any other medication that you are taking.

Lastly, be careful about the dosage of Meclizine. Take it as prescribed and do not increase the dosage in an effort to make the drug work faster. Be patient. Otherwise, you might overdose. As soon as the person appears to be in seizures or is hallucinating, an overdose has occurred. Once you identify these symptoms, get medical attention as soon as possible.
