Lorazepam is in a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. It belongs to the same family of drugs that include Valium and Xanax. Lorazepam is marketed under the brand names Temesta and Ativan. It has been widely used to treat anxiety since late 1970s. Lorazepam acts swiftly. That’s why it is the treatment of choice among clinicians for chronic anxiety.

Through the years, Lorazepam have taken under different brand names. It has been considered a classic drug that was developed and manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Lorazepam is indicated for treatment of chronic anxiety disorders. It is also used to manage anxiety that is associated with depression. In some cases, Lorazepam is used with other drugs to ease the discomfort of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. It is also sometimes used to treat alcohol withdrawal.

Lorazepam enhances the action of GABA in the brain in reducing brain activity, which stimulates anxiety. One reason that makes Lorazepam the treatment of choice among other benzodiazepine drugs is that it is removed from the blood quickly, decreasing any risks of accumulating high levels of the drug in the blood. It has a low level of toxicity but acts rapidly in treating anxiety.

Lorazepam is a prescription medicine that is available in oral and intravenous forms of different strength. Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor will put you under Lorazepam treatment in a specific dosage for a specific period of time.

Usually, patients who are being treated for anxiety are given 2 to 3mg of Lorazepam, which is divided into two to three doses daily. Patients treated for insomnia are usually given 2-4mg of Lorazepam before bedtime. Other uses of Lorazepam are determined according to the need of the patient.

Lorazepam causes several symptoms of side effects that may present themselves as discomforts. Naturally, dizziness, sedation, weakness, and unsteadiness occur. Such symptoms usually disappear. If they do not and they become worse or they came with other serious symptoms such as seizures, tremors, muscle cramps, and sweating, call your doctor immediately.

Due to the drowsy effect, it is advisable that you do not engage in activities that require alertness while you are under Lorazepam treatment.

Lorazepam must not be used in pregnant and lactating women. It has high risks of harming the unborn baby. Also, Lorazepam has been found to be secreted in breast milk and may be transmitted to the nursing baby. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, you must talk to your doctor before starting on Lorazepam therapy.

There are some other things that you must talk to your doctor about before using Lorazepam. One of those is the possibility of allergy. Tell your doctor of your medical history as well. Certain medical conditions may make you unfit to take Lorazepam. Drug dependency and histories of depression or other psychiatric conditions must also be noted.

It is also important that your doctor take notes of the prescription and non-prescription drugs that you are currently using and which, may coincide with your Lorazepam use.
