Linezolid review

Linezolid is an antibacterial medication that is used against Gram-positive bacteria, which have become resistant to other antibiotics. It is distributed by Pfizer under different brand names Zyvox, Zyvoxid, and Zyvoxam in different parts of the world.
Linezolid has been discovered since the 1980s but it was only in 2000 when it was approved for use. To date, it is the only oxazolidinone antibiotic that is commercially available although others are currently being developed.
Relatively, Linezolid is a safe drug to use for short periods of time. It can be administered to patients with kidney or liver ailments and in patients of different ages. Linezolid is available in tablet, liquid, and IV forms. The tablet and oral suspension are to be taken by mouth once or twice a day with or without food. The daily dosage requirement depends on the seriousness of the patient’s condition. The IV form is mostly used in patients who are confined in the hospital due to serious infections. Once the patient start getting better, he can be switched from intravenous Linezolid to the oral form without sacrificing its efficiency.
Linezolid must be taken regularly for the required period of time. This is to ensure that the body maintains a specific amount of the drug fighting the infection and stopping the growth of the bacteria.
Linezolid comes with very mild side effects when used for a short period of time. Commonly, it causes diarrhea, headache, stomach upset, constipation, and insomnia. Such symptoms may disappear shortly, depending on how well your body becomes adjusted to having Linezolid around. If your symptoms worsen or persist for a longer period of time, talk to your doctor immediately. Your symptoms of side effects must never overpower the benefits that you get out of the drug.
Before taking Linezolid, it is important that you consult a medical professional. You must discuss your medical history with your doctor as well as the medication treatments you are currently under. Pregnancy and lactation must also be taken into serious consideration.
Dosage adjustment may be required for patients who are hypertensive as well as those who have an overactive thyroid. Drug interactions against cancer medicines, antidepressants, migraine drugs, and other antibiotics must also be noted.
While taking Linezolid, it is also important that you watch over your food intake. Food and beverages with tyramine must not be taken in large amounts. Such food and beverage include raisins, bananas, avocados, turkey, papaya, beer, and some red wines among others.
