Levobunolol is a beta-blocker drug that is used to treat increase pressure in the eyes that is caused by a condition called ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. It is available in the form of eye drops.
When Levobunolol is instilled into the affected eye, it will lower the intraocular pressure. This will help in the prevention of glaucomatous visual field loss and optic nerve damage. With one drop of the drug, it can already be detected after one hour after application and maximum effect is apparent after 2 to 6 hours. Levobunolol was observed to have significantly decreased the intraocular pressure in patients and maintained it at that level for 24 hours.
Levobunolol decreases intraocular pressure by decreasing aqueous humor production. This process in turn will decrease amounts of aqueous flow thus lowering the intraocular pressure.
Levobunolol can be used as a stand-alone treatment but it can also be used together with other drugs to be more effective and potent.
It should be remembered that Levobunolol are only in the form of eye drops and topical solutions. Tablets, capsules and other forms of Levobunolol are none existent.
Before using the eye drops it needs to be shaken very well. This should be done every time the Levobunolol drops are used.
First you must wash your hands to avoid any unwanted contamination. Now tilt the head back and press gently on the skin on the lower eyelid. Pull it away from the eye to create a space. Press on the dropper and let the solution hit the space you have created. Release the lower eyelid and gently close your eyes. Keep your eyes closed and put pressure in the inner corner of the affected eye. Do this for at least 1 minute to let the eye absorb the medication.
Keep the medicine as infection free as possible. If possible, do not touch the applicator tip or any surface to it. You also need to practice proper hand washing before and after application of eye drops.
The dosage will differ from patient to patient. So to know what proper dosage to use, ask your doctor about it. The same applies to the number of doses you need to take each day and schedule on when you should take them.
Now, it is possible that the doctor may give you other medications to go along with Levobunolol. Before applying these other medicines, it would be best to wait for a few minutes and let Levobunolol to set in first.
Patients with known contraindication to components of beta-adrenoceptor blocking agents should be cautious when taking Levobunolol. This would include patients with heart blocks and abnormal low heart rate. If a patient is known to have congestive heart failure, it is advisable to control that disease first before starting therapy with Levobunolol. Caution should also be taken by patients who have diminished pulmonary function.
Aside from the good effects of the drug, some times adverse effects also go along with it though they are quite rare. The possible adverse effects of Levobunolol are itching, decreased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, urticaria, dizziness, ataxia, lethargy and headache. A patient however will not be able to experience all of these adverse effects. And if any of these adverse effects persist, report to your doctor immediately.
