Lercanidipine belongs to the drug class known as calcium channel blockers. It is normally indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). It relaxes and dilates the blood vessels thereby allowing blood to flow more freely throughout the body. Consequently, blood pressure is reduced and the heart is able to function more efficiently.

Make an effort to read the manufacturer's information about Lercanidipine prior to starting treatment. Follow the physician's instructions to the letter and never take more or less than the prescribed dosage. Taking Lercanidipine on an empty stomach or an hour before meals is recommended. Also, you need to ingest the tablet in one piece followed by a glass of water. Try not to take the medication with a high-fat meal or with grapefruit.

It is highly recommended to take your medication at around the same time each day so as to avert missing any doses. In case actually miss a dose, take it the instant you remember. However, if it is just about time for the next dose, just skip the one you've misses and carry on with your regular schedule. For no reason should you try to take two doses of the drug in one go in an attempt to compensate. Bear in mind that if you're in doubt you can always speak with physician or pharmacist.

Prior to starting Lercanidipine therapy, female patients should notify their doctors about pregnancy or plans of conceiving a baby, as well as breastfeeding intentions. Renal or liver diseases should also be reported. Aside from that, you also need to inform your physician about a previous heart attack or any cardiovascular disorders that you may have.

You need to have your blood pressure and pulse rate checked on a regular basis for the duration of the Lercanidipine therapy. Ask your doctor what your BP and pulse rate should be so that you will have an idea of the abnormal reading that warrants medical attention.

Do not attempt to operate a machine or drive a vehicle when taking the drug. It could cause you to feel light-headed. To trim down the risk of fainting or dizzy spells, do not stand up or sit down rapidly. In addition, avoid ingesting alcoholic beverages together with the medication because they can augment your heart rate, make you more giddy and increase flushing.

Do not abruptly discontinue the use of Lercanidipine. Consult with your doctor first and be advised in how you can progressively decrease the dose. If you are scheduled for surgery, inform your surgeon or anaesthesiologist that you are undergoing Lercanidipine therapy.

Taking Lercanidipine may bring about a number of untoward effects. Promptly report to your doctor as soon as you notice any of the following signs and symptoms: irregular heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain; swelling of the ankles or legs; or dizziness and fainting spells.

Some side effects, though they're not life threatening, could become bothersome if they persist. These symptoms usually include facial flushing, drowsiness, headache, fatigue, stomach pain, or nausea and vomiting.
