Isradipine is a calcium channel blocker. Through the blocking of calcium, this medication widens the blood vessels for treatment of high blood pressure.
Isradipine is known under the brand names DynaCirc CR and DynaCirc. It is prescribed to adults suffering from high blood pressure. It can be used alone, or to complement a diuretic to flush out excessive bodily water.
Isradipine eases the heart’s workload by slowing the flow of nerve impulses via the heart muscle, consequently slowing down the heartbeat. It then improves the blood flow via the heart, thereby reducing blood pressure.
Patients may also take a controlled-release version of this medication to maintain a low blood pressure for a day.
The dosage for Isradipine is adjusted according to the conditions and needs of the patient. Usually, doctors prescribe a starting dose of 2.5 milligrams taken twice a day. It may be taken along with a diuretic medication. This drug can lower the blood pressure 2-3 hours after the first dose, although the full effect takes place 2-4 weeks after administration of the medicine.
After 2-4 weeks, patients may increase their dosage by 5 milligrams daily. This is taken 2-4 weeks or until the maximum recommended dosage of 20 milligrams daily is reached.
Older patients will have to begin with a 2.5-milligram dosage taken twice a day. However there is a need for close monitoring since the patient’s condition can change the medicine’s effects.
The controlled release version of this medicine has an initial dose of 5 milligrams taken once per day. The same dose is given to older patients or those who have kidney and liver ailments.
The dosage can then be increased up to 20 milligrams taken once a day.
It should be noted that not all patients who use Isradipine experience side effects. Some may experience little to no side effects, although some may experience more.
One of most common side effects that users may experience is dizziness or headache. This happens during the first days of the treatment. Patients may use aspirin or similar medicine to control the headache.
Patients may also suffer from nausea, heartburn, changed vision, weakness, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and flushing. These side effects however may disappear once the body adjusts to the medication.
Patients should immediately seek medical help in case these side effects continue or worsen.
Patients should be open about their medical history before taking Isradipine. They should inform their doctors if they have had liver disease, heart problems, kidney disease, or blood disorder.
Isradipine should not be used during pregnancy. It is also not clear whether this drug can be passed on to infants through breastfeeding. Pregnant patients may have to get clearance from their doctors before using this medication.
Patients should also tell their doctors if they are taking any medications, whether prescription or over the counter drugs, before taking Isradipine. Drugs like blood pressure medicines, fentanyl, intravenous calcium, beta-blockers, and digoxin may interfere with the effectiveness of Isradipine.
