  Isotret

Isotret

Isotret review

Isotret is a brand name for the generic drug isotretoin, which is prescribed for the treatment of severe nodular acne. Nodules are inflamed lesions or bumps that often become infected or even bloody. Isotret has been shown to result in complete remission of severe nodular acne after a course of 15 to 20 weeks of treatment. Isotret comes in soft gel capsules and should be taken with food. Isotret can have serious side effects, so it is recommended as a treatment only when all other treatments have failed.

Some of these side effects include inflammation of the lips, which can often be remedied by adjusting your dosage of Isotret. In some cases patients experience dryness of the skin or mucous membranes, including the lips, nasal passages and eyes. You may also experience heart palpitations or increased heart rate, swelling, fatigue, weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, increased or decreased blood sugar levels, blood clots, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis, inflammation of the pancreas, bleeding gums, inflammation of the colon, nausea, upset stomach, angina, arthritis, back pain, weakness, tendonitis. You may also experience increased pressure in the brain, dizziness, headache, drowsiness or insomnia, lethargy, seizures, or suicidal thoughts. Some people also experience irregular periods, hair loss, nosebleeds, flushing, sweating, rash, hives, nail infection, conjunctivitis, sensitivity to light, visual disturbances, elevated cholesterol, inflammation of the cornea, or high level of uric acid.

There are some medications that should be avoided while you are taking Isotret. You should not take vitamin A or any supplements with vitamin A in them, since Isotret already contains high doses of vitamin A. In addition, the use of tetracyclines has been known to increase the negative side effects of Isotret. If you are taking micro-dose progesterone as contraceptives during treatment with Isotret, you may need to ask your doctor to prescribe a different contraceptive, as these pills may not be effective during Isotret treatment. You should also not medicate depression with St. John’s Wort, because it may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

If you are a teenager or young adult, you should be alert to the possibility of psychiatric disorders while you are taking Isotret. Isotret may cause or increase depression, mood disturbances, aggression or psychosis. Families should also observe patients carefully if they are on this medication, to help theme valuate for these psychiatric side effects. If these effects start to develop, you should stop using Isotret and call your doctor right away.

It is very important that you do not become pregnant while taking Isotret. Isotret can cause severe birth defects for an unborn baby. Your doctor will discuss with you what methods of contraception you are using, but it is important to remember that no form of birth control is one hundred percent effective. While you are undergoing Isotret treatment, it is very advisable that you use a secondary, back-up form of contraception to ensure that a pregnancy does not happen. You should also not breast feed a baby while taking Isotret.
