Isosorbide mononitrate, commonly referred to as Ismo, belongs to a class of medication called nitrates. Ismo is known to widen or relax the blood vessels, making it easy for the heart to pump blood to various parts of the body. Ismo is used in preventing angina attacks or chest pains.
Ismo is used as exactly as directed by a physician. It is advised that patients be careful about the timing of the doses of ismo. The blood has to be free of ismo for certain times of the day. A patient may usually experience headache when taking this medicine, although taking aspirin can be effective in treating it. Such side effect typically stops once treatment with ismo continues. When a patient suddenly stops taking ismo, he or she may suddenly experience chest pains.
Patients should inform their physicians their medical background before taking this drug, especially those who have had heart attack, low blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, anemia, and migraine. Also, those who have had kidney and liver diseases and allergic to nitrates might have to take an adjustment in dosage.
A dosage of ismo is taken with a glass full of water. Typically, ismo is taken in the morning, just before breakfast. Ismo is swallowed wholly- never chew or crush it. It releases medication slowly in the body. The tablets must be stored at room temperature, and must be kept from heat and moisture.
Patients undergoing ismo medication can suffer from overdose indicated by several conditions such as headache, difficulty in breathing, muscle cramps, diarrhea, fainting, muscle cramps, seizures, vomiting, and flushes.
Patients should be cautious when performing hazardous tasks like driving and operating on machineries. Patients should also stand up deliberately from a lying or sitting stance since ismo can cause dizziness. Patients taking ismo should never take alcoholic beverages since it widens the blood vessels and can cause low blood pressure, drowsiness, and dizziness.
In case patients report any of the following: irregular heartbeat, dry mouth, fainting, blurred vision, allergic reaction such as swelling of the face and lips, then it is advisable to stop taking ismo and immediately seek medical help.
Other less serious conditions like dizziness, fast heartbeat, weakness, and flushing may occur, although patients can still continue taking the medication.
There are certain drugs that patients taking ismo need to avoid. Patients must not take sildenafil or Viagra which is a popular treatment for impotence. Patients who simultaneously take both medications can experience dangerously low blood pressure. Those who are taking any of the following medications such as dihydroergotamine and any medicines for irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure may also have to inform their physicians before taking ismo.
Alternatively, patients may have to be given an adjustment in dosage or be closely monitored if they take the medicines simultaneously with ismo. Other drugs not listed in this review may also have an effect once taken with ismo, so it is important that patients talk to their doctor or pharmacist before taking any drugs alongside ismo.
