Iloprost is artificial prostacylin that is mainly used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. This drug works by opening up the blood vessels in the lungs which allows it to carry more blood, reduce chances of blood clotting by reducing clumping of red blood cells and reduces the number of unhelpful cells in broken blood vessels.
Iloprost belongs to a class of drugs known as cardiovascular agents and may also be used to treat other conditions aside from pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Iloprost should be taken by anyone who gets the right prescription.
Iloprost is not advised to be taken by pregnant women as the effects of this to an unborn baby are unknown. Since this could pass onto breast milk in small amounts, breastfeeding mothers should also avoid taking this drug. If there are any concerns with pregnant or lactating women taking this drug, doctor’s advice should be sought.
Some conditions such as low blood pressure, kidney, liver and heart disease, COPD, cough and asthma should be considered heavily by the doctor if the patient would be taking iloprost.
Iloprost should only be used exactly as specified by the doctor. This should only be used with the Prodose AAD system and never with any other types of nebulizers.
Generally, the first dosage of iloprost to be inhaled would be 2.5mcg. If this dosage can be handled easily by the patient, then it could be increased to 5mcg and maintained at that amount. Iloprost is generally taken around 6 to 9 times a day depending on the tolerability and needs of a patient. It was said in a clinical study that maximum dosage of iloprost per day would be 45mcg.
If a dose is missed, take a dose as soon as remembered but if it is remembered when the schedule for the next dosage is close, forfeit that dosage and just take the scheduled dosage. This drug should never be used on double dosages.
An overdose of iloprost is very unlikely to happen but if ever the patient would suspect it or would feel unlikely symptoms after taking this drug, seek medical attention immediately.
Serious side effects are not likely to be caused by iloprost however; there are a handful of mild side effects that a patient might experience that could be bothersome. If these mild side effects do not go away in time, seek medical help.
Some of the side effects that could possibly be brought about by iloprost would include throat irritation, coughing, hoarseness of the voice, headache, nausea, dizziness, dryness in certain parts of the face, jaw tightness and jaw pain.
There could also be other side effects not mentioned here.
Iloprost is not a very sensitive drug however, the doctor should still be aware of what other drugs the patient may be taking even vitamins, supplements, minerals and herbal products.
Iloprost should only be taken exactly as the doctor would recommend it. If anything is not clearly understood about dosages and on how to take this drug, do not hesitate to ask pharmacists, doctors or any medical professional.
Inhaling iloprost may cause dizziness and fainting in some cases. With that, make sure to be careful when moving out of a chair or a bed when taking this drug. The reason for this is because iloprost would lower blood pressure significantly.
