  Ibritumomab

Ibritumomab

Ibritumomab review

Ibritumomab is a protein that would target white blood cells. When it is fixed onto a radioactive chemical, it is directly delivered towards the tumor. When combined with other medicines, this drug can be used to treat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Ibritumomab can also be used on several other conditions asides from the ones mentioned above.

Ibritumomab is generally prescribed to fight tumors or other infections This drug should never be taken by anyone who is allergic to it as well to radioactive chemicals and other forms of protein.

Ibritumomab should never be taken by pregnant women as this can cause serious harm to the baby. If expecting a baby, taking birth control pills is advised.

When being treated with ibritumomab, avoid all contacts with virus as much as possible as this could be passed on easily to you. Never get in contact with people who have contagious illnesses, even fever. Never get a live vaccine when on ibritumomab or get near anyone who has had a recent live vaccine.

Make sure to ask a doctor if the patient taking ibritumomab would have other conditions such as kidney disease, respiratory problems, low platelet counts, a history of any heart problems, liver disease, infections, bleeding problems and blood clotting problems.

Ibritumomab is commonly used in combination with rituximab and is given through an injection of which a healthcare professional would assist the patient.

Ibritumomab is generally given once every seven to nine days depending on the doctor’s instructions. If ever the patient would miss a dose, the doctor should be immediately contacted. On the other hand, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical help as overdose can cause several problems. Some symptoms of overdosing could include pale skin, bleeding, weakness and getting bruised easily.

Some known side effects of ibritumomab would include white patches on various parts of the mouth, fever, fly symptoms, body aches, sore throat, headache, rashes, redness or skin changes in the area of where ibritumomab was injected.

Some serious side effects that a patient may encounter would be nausea, dizziness, light headedness, palpitations, breathing problems, chest pain or pain in the shoulders and arms just as soon as ibritumomab is injected. If this case would happen, be sure to let the doctor know immediately.

Some mild side effects that a patient could encounter would be anxiety, joint pain, nausea, loss of appetite and dizziness. Although these generally do not need medical attention, medical attention should be sought immediately if these side effects do not go away.

Medicines that are used as blood thinners such as alteplase, clopidogrel, warfarin, anistreplase, ticlopidine, dipyridamole, sulfinpyrazone, and urokinase can possibly interact with ibritumomab. If it happens that the patient has to take this drug along with ibritumomab, the doctor should be clearly informed about this.

The doctor should also be aware of whatever vitamins, minerals, supplements and herbal products the patient is taking aside from ibritumomab.

Patients taking this drug would be more susceptible to outside factors such as viruses. With that, the patient should avoid any contacts with viruses. Some things that can be done would be to avoid people who have jus had live vaccines or to avoid getting live vaccines as the viruses involved here could spread and affect easily as stated earlier.
