Griseofulvin is drug used to treat fungal infections. Essentially, it works by binding itself to the keratin in the skin, helping it resist fungal infections. It stops the fungal cells from dividing and thus prevents the fungal infection from spreading.
Applicable to both humans and animals, Griseofulvin can treat infections in the skin in nails. It is commonly prescribed for ringworm infections.
For skin infections, Griseofulvin is commonly prescribed to conditions like athlete’s foot and jock itch. It is also effective for fungal infections affecting the scalp.
Griseofulvin offers a lot of variety in terms of the way the patient may take it. It is available as a tablet, a capsule and as a liquid that should be taken orally. In most cases, Griseofulvin is taken once daily. However, the dosage may vary according to the kind of infection. In some instances, the patient may need to drink it for two to four times everyday. Also, when taking it in liquid form, the patient must remember to shake the bottle to ensure the medicine is thoroughly mixed.
Once you have taken Griseofulvin, your condition will improve significantly over the next few days. However, do not be tempted to stop drinking the medicine as soon as you fell well. To ensure that the infection will disappear completely, you must keep drinking Griseofulvin over a prolonged period of time. If you had a skin infection, typically, you will need to drink Griseofulvin for two to four weeks. As for scalp and hair infections, take it for four to six weeks. Foot infections may take up to eight weeks while infections on the fingernail may take up to four months. Toenail infections require the longest treatment. In fact, treatment for toenail infection will require you to drink Griseofulvin for up to six months.
Because Griseofulvin is derived from a form of penicillin, inform your doctor of any allergic reactions that you may have experienced with penicillin.
Before starting Griseofulvin, inform your doctor of any other medication which you are currently taking. Doing this will help your doctor evaluate the possibility of Griseofulvin to interact negatively with your current medications.
Also, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor to see whether taking Griseofulvin is safe for you and the baby.
In the course of treatment, drinking Griseofulvin may cause certain side effects. In some cases, Griseofulvin makes the patient feel sleepy. For some people, the result may be opposite. They may experience difficulty in sleeping.
The patient may experience headache or dizziness. He may also experience diarrhea or vomiting. An upset stomach is also a possible side effect. The patient may also feel thirsty and tired all the time. In some cases, the patient may also faint. However, these side effects are usually temporary and they will go away in time. If they persist, inform your doctor so that your medication may be re-evaluated.
However, if more severe side effects like fever, skin rash, mouth soreness or sore throat are experienced, the patient must immediately inform the doctor.
