Gleevec is a prescribed drug for the purpose of treating leukemia and other intestinal tumors. It carries the generic name of Imatinib-Oral.

Gleevec can be consumed by mouth together with a glass of water. It is best to eat your meals before taking the medicine to avoid upset stomach. Usually, the medicine can be taken once a day or as prescribed by your physician. For patients who have difficulty in swallowing the medicine in whole, it can be dissolved over a glass of water and must be consumed immediately. The amount of water to dissolve the tablet can be determined by your doctor.

Gleevec should be taken according to your medical provider and should not be less than or more than the dosage to prevent serious medical problem due to overdose.

When consulting your doctor, it is important to inform any previous ailments especially if you have history of kidney problems, liver disorders, lung disease, heart disease, cancer or allergies with medicines.

While on medication with Gleevec, your body’s immune system weakens which would be difficult for your body to protect itself from getting infections. While on the stage of medication, it is important that you have to be very conscious on your body. It is a good habit to frequently wash your hands and avoid getting near people who are suffering from other diseases.

Stay away from objects or places which might get you injured. Also avoid doing extreme activities which can lead to accidents. It is ideal to take a rest or be in a hospital while on a treatment stage.

Intake of Gleecev for pregnant women is not recommended because it might have an adverse effect with the baby. If you are on schedule for a treatment, you must avoid getting pregnant as this would prevent you from getting your medication. Best if you first consult your doctor before undergoing medication.

Some drugs can have a negative reaction with Gleecev. Some of the known medicines which can have such reactions include medicines for cancer, drugs for HIV patients, blood thinners, macrolide antibiotics, anti-seizure drugs, cholesterol control drugs, heart disease drugs, medicine for diabetes and other drugs.

It is also prohibited to share this medicine with other persons without medical advice because it can cause emergency condition on the person. Gleecev can only be administered with the consent of a doctor.

Side effects which are commonly associated with the intake of Gleecev include diarrhea, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, swelling of legs and muscle cramps. Stomach pains, severe tiredness, sore throat, breathing problem, bleeding or bruises and joint pain. Allergic reactions can also occur which causes itching, dizziness and skin rashes.

There are even instances where severe side effects occur to patients taking Gleevec causing death due to the increase of pressure on the brain or heart. It can also cause swelling of the eyes and brain which is very fatal. If these symptoms persist, get medical attention the soonest time possible.
