Fulvestrant is an anti-estrogen drug which is used for the treatment of specific types of cancer. It comes as an injection administered once a month.
Fulvestrant is known by the brand name Faslodex. It is prescribed to women who have breast cancer that has developed into the other parts of the body, especially among menopausal women. It is particularly given to patients who have not benefited from other medications such as tamoxifen.
Fulgestrant blocks the effects of estrogen in the body, causing a slowdown in the growth of tumor cells. Estrogen is particularly needed by cancer cells to grow.
Fulvestrant is administered intramuscularly, meaning it is injected on the buttock muscles once a month. The dosage can be 1-2 injections, according to the conditions of the patient. The injection may be allowed to reach room temperature prior to administration to lessen the discomfort on the user.
Fulvestrant is normally clear. Patients should check first on its color for any discoloration or particles before using the drug.
Users of Fulvestrant may experience side effects such as redness, pain or swelling at the injected area. They may also experience vomiting, nausea, constipation, lack of appetite, diarrhea, dizziness, tiredness, upset stomach, weakness, body aches, and headache after using this drug
Fulvestrant can also cause users to experience hot flushes, as well as difficulty in sleeping. It is advised that users change their diet by eating small meals and limit their physical activity to lessen the risks of vomiting and nausea.

Fulvestrant can also cause more serious side effects such as painful, burning or frequent urination, tingling sensation on the hands or feet, and swelling, pain, or redness of the legs and arms. Patients may also experience pain in the pelvis, bones, or hip, persistent cough and sore throat, continuous bleeding in the vagina, depression and anxiety.
It is unlikely that Fulvestrant can cause serious allergic reaction, although patients should immediately get medical help in case they experience symptoms such as rashes, swelling, itching, dizziness, and difficulty in breathing.
Patients should tell their physicians or pharmacists if they are allergic to benzyl alcohol, or any other medication.
Fulvestrant should be used with caution by those who have bleeding problems and thrombocytopenia or low platelet count. Those who use blood thinners like warfarin will also have to be cautious in using Fulvestrant.
Patients may feel dizzy after using this medication so they should be cautious when performing activities that require mental alertness like driving. They should also limit their alcohol intake while taking this medication.
Fulvestrant should not be taken by pregnant women since it can harm the fetus. It should also be taken with precaution by those with liver or kidney troubles, or those who have a history of bone thinning or osteoporosis.
This medication should never be used by children and adolescents. Store out of reach of children and keep at room temperature.
