Fludrocortisone is a synthetic corticosteroid with great mineralacorticois potency and moderate glucocorticoid potency. This drug is primarily used to substitute or replace a hormone named aldosterone in several forms of adrenal insufficiency such as classic salt wasting form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia and Addison’s disease. There are also cases when Fludrocortisone is used to treat orthostatic hypotension.
Put simply, Fludrocortisone is used to control the amount of fluids and sodium lost in the body through the urine. The drug works by decreasing the amount of sodium that is lost during urination.
The brand name of Fludrocortisone in the United States is Florinef. It is available in 0.1 mg tablets and typical daily doses for replacement of mineralocorticoids range between 0.05 mg – 0.2 mg. In order to check and confirm if the correct dosage is reached, the renin plasma, potassium levels and soium levels of the body is examined through blood tests.
Fludrocortisone comes in tablet form and should be taken by mouth. It is not advisable to stop the drug intake or the medication abruptly and without the consent of a doctor because it might lead to appetite loss, vomiting, upset stomach, confusion, drowsiness, headache, joint and muscle pain, fever, weight loss and skin peeling.
The doctor will be the one to adjust the dosage by slowly decreasing it so that the body can adjust appropriately. For cases wherein the body reacts aversively with the cessation of the drug intake, the doctor may have to advice you to take the drug again temporarily so that the abovementioned symptoms will disappear.
If you are allergic to Fludrocortisone, aspirin, and tartrazine, inform your doctor so as to avoid any future allergic reactions. Inform also your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking anticoagulants, arthritis medications, aspirin, cyclosporine, digoxine, diuretics, estrogen, ketoconazole, oral contraceptives, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, theophylline, vitamins and other herbal supplements.
If you are currently suffering from fungal infection that is not skin-related, do not take Fludrocortisone without consulting your doctor first. If you have experienced or is having the following medical conditions, it would be best to tell your doctor about it prior to taking Fludrocortisone: liver/heart/kidney/intestinal disease, ulcers, diabetes, tuberculosis, underactive thyroid gland, seizures, high blood pressure, herpes eye infections, mental illness, osteoporosis and myasthenia gravis.
If you have a history of taking arthritis medication and large doses of aspirin, do try to limit your alcoholic beverages consumption while taking Fludrocortisone because the drug makes the intestines and stomach more vulnerable to the irritating effects of aspirin, alcohol and other medications for arthritis which would eventually increase your chances of acquiring ulcers.
A low-sodium, low-salt, high-protein or potassium-rich diet should be integrated in the lifestyle of a person who is taking Fludrocortisone medications to guarantee the optimum result of the drug. Taking Fludrocortisone with milk or food is greatly suggested.
Common side effects of Fludrocortisone include upset stomach, irregular or absent menstrual periods, stomach irritation, easy bruising, increased hair growth, vomiting, headache, acne, anxiety, dizziness, depression, insomnia and restlessness.
More serious symptoms include black or tarry stool, skin rashes, muscle weakness, swelling in any part of the body, vision problems and cold or infections that seem to last for a long time.
