Ezetimibe

Ezetimibe review by Medicalook.com

Ezetimibe is a drug related to diet, weight control and exercise. It is known to reduce the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the body as well as treat and regulate high cholesterol in the body. It acts by decreasing the cholesterol absorption in the intestine. When other cholesterol-lowering medeications cannot be tolerated by the body, Ezetimibe can be used alone. However, if cholesterol levels cannot be controlled by statin medications, it can be paired with Ezetimibe to produce an effect to the body.

Ezetimibe targets the brush border of the small intestine where it prevents absorption of cholesterol. Decreased cholesterol absorption increases LDL-cholesterol uptakes into the cells, resulting to decreased blood plasma levels.

You should not take Ezetimibe when you are allergic to one of its ingredients or if you have a liver disease. It would be best if you consult with your doctor before you decide to take Ezetimibe so that you can ensure your safety. Other people who can’t take Ezetimibe directly are those who have kidney-related diseases, diabetes, and overactive thyroid. People who intake hormonal or steroidal medicines are also advised to consult with their doctor before they undergo Ezetimibe medication.

Having one or more of the abovementioned conditions above does not necessarily mean that one cannot take Ezetimibe. It is up to the doctor to assess whether or not an individual’s body can tolerate Ezetimibe or not. Special laboratory tests such as blood tests and liver function tests may be performed to thoroughly assess whether an individual can safely take Ezetimibe and in some cases, the doctor may just have to adjust the dosage of Ezetimibe intake.

Pregnant women are highly discouraged in taking Ezetimibe because it has the tendency to contaminate the breast milk of the mother and it can affect the baby. Older adults also tend to encounter complications or unpleasant side effects from Ezetimibe that’s why a trip to the doctor must be carried out before taking the said drug.

Basically, individuals should take the medicine just as it was prescribed by the doctor. Do not take the medication in smaller or larger amounts to achieve optimum and quick results. It is highly suggested to take the medication along with a full glass of water to facilitate faster absorption in the body system. Usually, Ezetimibe is taken only once a day and it is highly suggested to take the drug at least the same time everyday. It does not really matter whether the drug is taken on a full or empty stomach but most doctors would still encourage their patients to take some food first prior to medicine intake. Avoid eating foods that are high in cholesterol and fats because that would only defeat your purpose of drinking Ezetimibe. As much as possible, do not stop your Ezetimibe intake without consulting your doctor first.

The effect of Ezetimibe may not be seen or felt until after several weeks of medication so there’s no need to panic or worry if ever you don’t see or feel results after a few days of medication only.

Perhaps the most serious side effects of Ezetimibe are hives, swelling of the face, tongue, throat and lips and difficulty breathing. Other minor side effects include muscle pain and weakness, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, diarrhea, stuffy or runny nose, body malaise, coughs and headache. If you think that the symptoms cannot be tolerated anymore, go to your nearest hospital immediately and have yourself checked by a doctor.
