Marketed under the name Myambutol, Ethambutol is a drug given as treatment to tuberculosis (TB) patients.
Ethambutamol is never the lone treatment for tuberculosis. It is usually taken together with other dmedicines.
It is sold under the name "Myambutol". Scientifically, this medicine is classified under a bacteriostatic antimycobacterial drugs.
Ethambutol works by formation of cell walls in the TB bacilli. This makes the cell wall of the bacteria easily permeable.
More specifically, it acts by ihibiting the production of arabinogalactan and arabinoman. This is done by discouraging the release of the decaprenil - R - arabinose activity. Later, mycolic acids will attach to the wall of the bacterial cell. It will create a mycolyl-arabinogalactan-peptidoglycan complex in the cell wall. This will make the bacterial cell highly permeable. Ethambutol’s effectiveness lies in its ability to exercise its bacteriostatic effect on many forms of tuberculostatics and tubeculous bacteria.
It is usually absorbed quickly through the gastrointestinal tract. After that, it is efficiently distributed to the tissues. However, 50% of it goes our through the urine, maintaining the same structure as when it was absorbed by the body.
