Elidel, which is generically prescribed as pimecrolimus topical, is commonly used to treat severe atopic dermatitis when other treatments have failed. Elidel is a topical immunosuppressant, which curtails the body’s immune system to fight the effects of severe atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is also known as eczema.
Elidel is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history which includes skin cancer, infections of the skin, herpes, chicken pox, kidney disease, a weak or suppressed immune system, Netherton’s syndrome, or swelling, redness, or irritation of large areas of the skin may not be able to take Elidel or may require careful monitoring while undergoing drug therapy with this medication, depending on the condition and the severity of the condition.
The American Food and Drug Administration rated Elidel as a pregnancy risk category C. This medication has a likelihood of causing harm or birth defects to an unborn baby. This medication has been proven to pass through the mother’s breast milk and may affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to women who are pregnant, nursing, or who have a high likelihood of becoming pregnant.
There is a risk of side effects associated with Elidel, some of which are severe. A patient who is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms which may include facial swelling, such as swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require emergency medical attention include symptoms such as swollen glands, the signs of a skin infection, worsening skin symptoms, fever, chills, body aches, or flu symptoms.
Other less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as acne, warts, redness, irritation, upset stomach, muscle pain, burning, tingling, sore skin, swollen hair follicles, runny nose, headaches, or sensitivity to temperature changes. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Elidel.
Elidel should be applied exactly as it has been prescribed by the physician. If the patient misses an application, the dose should be applied as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed application should be skipped to avoid the potential for an overdose. The patient should never apply a double dose of this medication. If an overdose is suspected, the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose may present with symptoms which include muscle stiffness and burning or stinging of the skin.
There is a risk of negative drug interactions associated with Elidel. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medications, including over the counter medication and herbal remedies. Medications that have a known drug interaction with Elidel include medications for heart problems, anti-fungal medications, erythromycin, and cimetidine. Sunlight, sunlamps, phototherapy, alcohol, and tanning beds do not mix well with Elidel, and should be avoided while undergoing drug therapy with this medication.
