Eflornithine review

Eflornithine is a drug initially conceptualized as a treatment for malignancies in the body such as cancer growths but has found its effective niche as an effective treatment for sleeping sickness caused by the agent Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. It is marketed in the US under the brand names Ornidyl and Vaniqa, though there are other names indicated in other markets.
The drug has a low half-life that makes it ideal for killing of the susceptible bacteria responsible for sleeping sickness. It is also referred to as the resurrection drug, as it is able to effectively bring back patients from a comatose related to the disease.
Other uses for the drug have been found out. First as a combinant drug for anti-inflammatory types, more specifically Sulindac, and is found out to be highly successful in reducing the occurrence of colorectal polyps. Second, the drug is also a very successful hair growth inhibitor and is ideal in the fashion and cosmetics industry.
Eflornithine is given to those who have any of the following types of illness or irregularities: sleeping sickness, abundant hair growth in unwanted places, and prevention of progression of colorectal polyps.
As a topical cream for women to use against unwanted hair growth, the drug is prepared in a 13.9% concentration of eflornithine hydrochloride. It is an effective and widely used drug, wherein about 58% of women were using it and had positive results pertaining to hair loss.
The drug is intended to block the processes of ornithine decarboxylase or ODC that is responsible for rapid cell growth and differentiation into hair. In effect the topical cream stops the hair follicles from rapidly dividing and therefore hair growth on the specific area is reduced to a negligible rate.
Since it is in topical cream form, there is no limit on the dosing of such over the affected area. However, it is advisable that the application should be done as a thin layer around the areas with unwanted hair growth. Most of these areas are the chin, arms, and the like. The drug should be rubbed-in thoroughly and applied two times a day. Eight hours should be given in between applications.
As part of the dosage and treatment regimen of hair removal, cosmetics and other compounds such as sunscreens may be applied over the same area once the initial eflornithine cream has dried. Tweezers may still be continued for extended effectivity.
Common side effects after application of the cream would be acne over the affected area, swollen skin, and buried hair symptoms. There are also indications that the drug may cause rashes, ingrown hairs, skin itching, as well as an overall increased risk of contracting herpes simplex on the applied skin area.
There have been no reported cases and interactions regarding other topical medication applications to the skin when also applied with eflornithine. As for pregnant women, there have been also no conclusive evidences that the drug may be harmful to the growing fetus, though it would still be highly suggested that one seeks out professional advice.
