  Effexor XR

Effexor XR pills

Effexor XR review by Medicalook.com

Effexor XR, which is generically prescribed as venlafaxine, is commonly used to treat depression, anxiety, and panic disorders. Effexor XR is part of the family of antidepressants known as SSNRIs, or selective serotonin norepinphrine reuptake inhibitors. SSNRIs help to balance the chemicals in the brain believed to cause depression, anxiety disorders, and panic disorders.

Effexor XR is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough medical history should be assessed prior to prescribing this medication. Patients with a medical history that includes allergies to venlafaxine, currently taking an MAO inhibitor, bipolar disorder, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, seizures, epilepsy, bleeding disorder, blood clotting disorder, or high cholesterol may not be able to take Effexor XR or may require careful monitoring while taking this medication, depending on the condition and severity of the condition.

The American Food and Drug Administration has rated Effexor XR with a pregnancy risk rating category C. Effexor XR may cause harm or birth defects to an unborn baby. It is likely that this medication will pass through the mother’s breast milk and affect a nursing baby. The prescribing physician should avoid prescribing this medication to a pregnant or nursing woman, or women who are likely to become pregnant.

Effexor XR comes with a risk of side effects, some of which are severe. A patient who is experiencing a serious side effect or an allergic reaction should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An allergic reaction will present with symptoms that include facial swelling, including swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, and throat, hives, and difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects which require immediate emergency medical attention include increased blood pressure, severe headaches with blurred vision, restlessness, overactive reflexes, loss of coordination, fever, coma, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fast heart rate, hallucinations, fainting, convulsions, extreme thirst with headache, weakness, easy bruising, easy bleeding.

There is a risk of increased behavioral dysfunction that can result in suicide. The patient should seek immediate medical attention if they display symptoms that include mood changes, panic attacks, aggression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, agitation, mania, severe restlessness, or thoughts of self harm or suicidal ideation.

Other less serious side effects typically do not require emergency medical attention but should be reported to the prescribing physician. Patients should be encouraged to report all side effects. Less serious side effects include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, anxiety, dry mouth, sweating, sexual dysfunction, headaches, blurry vision, insomnia, tremor, chills, changes in appetite, or changes in weight. Less serious side effects can often be reduced to a tolerable level by reducing the dosage of Effexor XR.

Effexor XR should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed. If the patient misses a dose, it should be taken as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped to avoid the potential for an overdose. The patient should never take a double dose of Effexor XR. If an overdose is suspected the patient should seek immediate emergency medical attention. An overdose will present with symptoms such as dizziness, sleepiness, tingling of the hands and feet, and numbness of the extremities.

There is a risk of negative drug interactions associated with Effexor XR. A thorough medical history should be understood prior to prescribing this medication. Patients should be urged to inquire with the prescribing physician before taking any new medication, including over the counter medication and herbal remedies. Medications that have a known interaction with Effexor XR include cimetidine, blood thinners, ketoconazole, tryptophan, haloperidol, almotriptan, addition antidepressants, and alcohol. I have been of Effexor XR for about 4 years at a somewhat extreme does of 450 mg as an outpatient. I have tried without success dropping the dose to 300 mg, but each time I do, my body hurts all over and I rush back to the 450 mg dose. My psychiatrist thinks I do well on it, but his words are "I don't know how we can ever get you off of it." I have night sweats and a slight tempeture most of the time, and this is embarrasing to me if I am lucky enough to sleep with someone... bob@thelaphotographer.com

I have been on Effexor XR, 150mgs for treatment of a dysthymia type depressive illness which I have had for years. Cannot speak highly enough of Effexor XR, has done wonders for me, still occasionally get blue days but only when life events dictate such a response, overall a dramatic improvement with no significant side effects at all. No weight gain, No sexual problems, slight increase of sweating when exercising...... A brilliant drug in my opinion.
