  Echothiophate iodide

Echothiophate iodide

Echothiophate iodide review

Echothiophate iodide is a drug used for the treatment of a variety of eye problems such as glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and esotropia. What the drug primarily does is relieve the unwanted pressure in the ocular area by increasing the amount of fluids drained from it. It also lessens the nervous strain on the eyes as it causes the eyes' pupils to become smaller and be less sensitive to light and dark situations.

The first main therapeutic mechanism of ecothiopate iodide is to relieve the same pressure that aggravates the glaucoma. The excess fluid that is responsible for the visual impairment brought about by the increased intravascular pressure in the optic tract. Another mechanism of effect of this drug is to help the eye focus on objects better, and is a potential treatment for those with esotropia.

It is classified as a parasympathomimetic. As a therapeutic classification, it is considered to be an anticholinesterase inhibitor, which means that it binds irreversibly with the cholinesterase permanently to produce the desired effect. The synthesis is so slow that it is known to take weeks for the whole substance applied to be fully utilized.

The drug is prescribed to those who have developed one of several eye diseases that is related to fluid retention, and buildup of fluid in the eyes. Since glaucoma is not easily detected and usually emerges when the disease is already irreversible, the drug is normally not given to prevent the fluid pressure buildup. The role of the drug is usually done post operative as a maintaining drug for possible fluid buildup due to the manipulation and irritation of the eyes.

As for those who are suffering from similar symptoms, the drug administration and prescription is not immediately given as there may be other reasons for the impairment of vision.

As for children with esotropia, the drug is given for corrective measures to lessen the interocular pressure and increase the chance of a better eye muscle control and movement, especially in focal control and management.

Administration of echothiophate iodide's dosage depends on the type of disease or illness. For early chronic simple glaucoma, a 0.03% solution administered to the eyes twice a day is sufficient. This is also a choice dosage for those with glaucoma secondary to a cataract injury or the like, but may be given a higher dose of 0.06%, 0.125%, or even as high as a 0.25% solution.

The duration of the treatment requires only a relatively short period of time. However, some medication regimen would call for an indefinite period so long as the drug is tolerated well. Nevertheless, if the condition of the eyes revert back or worsens after slow and gradual withdrawal of the medication, then surgery will have to be the next alternative solution for corrective measures of glaucoma or any of the abovementioned diseases encompassed by the medication treatment.

Some of the side effects which may be expected from the medication regimen of echothiophate iodide would have to be blurred vision, cloudy peripheral vision, excessive shedding of tears and inflammation of the iris, twitching, and partial stinging of the eyes. These should all be monitored nevertheless despite their expected occurrences.

An already present inflammation of the eye should be a contraindication of the drug. This also goes with angle-closure glaucoma, and hypersensitivity to the drug.
