  Domperidone

Domperidone

Domperidone review

Domperidone is a drug used to relieve abdominal discomfort. It is developed by Janssen Pharmaceutical and is distributed under the trade name Motilium.

Domperidone is used to treat the common symptoms of abdominal disorders such as nausea and vomiting. Aside from treating digestive problems, Domperidone can also work out effectively in stimulating lactation among woman who had just given birth. However, due to safety concerns, it is hardly advised to be used in increasing breast milk production.

Janssen Pharmaceutical tried several times to receive an FDA approval regarding the use of Domperidone in lactating women but they have been turned down over and over. FDA cited unknown risks to both mother and child, which may be infused by the medicine. Although unconfirmed, some incidents of cardiac arrest and irregular heart beat have been found related to Domperidone use.

Domperidone is safe, however, to be used in treating gastrointestinal problems, for which it was intended for in the first place. But before taking the drug for whatever digestive-related condition you may have, it is advisable that you consult your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have had previous or ongoing battle with breast cancer. He also needs to know if you are allergic to the drug or any of its compounds. Prescription and non-prescription drugs that you are currently using, which may counteract the effects of Domperidone, must also be noted. Pregnant women must be forbidden to take the drug unless it is really needed. Domperidone may cause fetal harm.

Domperidone is usually taken in an empty stomach, thirty minutes before every meal and before bedtime. Remember to stick to your Domperidone prescription. Do not take more of the drug to speed up the healing process. Your symptoms will certainly not improve by doubling the dosage. The most that you could get from overdose is an increased risk for serious side effects. Also, do not stop taking Domperidone as soon as your condition improves. If your symptoms go away much earlier than expected, you need to consult your doctor first before stopping your Domperidone intake.

Domperidone may cause mild episodes of headache, dizziness, nervousness, and dry mouth. Such side effects usually occur during the first few days of using the medicine. As soon as your body adjusts to the medication, the side effects would stop on its own. If your side effects persist, worsen, or came with other, more serious conditions, call your doctor immediately. Among the alarm signs that you must look through include leg cramps, severe stomach pain, change in menstrual cycle, breast discharge, and breathing difficulties among others. Remember that using Domperidone and any medicine for that matter must not put you through any more discomfort. Talk to your doctor if you feel that the side effects of using Domperidone is bothersome. He would either change your prescription or adjust your dosage.

Only the doctor understands fully the interactions that Domperidone may cause in the body’s system. Do not suggest your prescription to anyone who has the same symptoms as yours. Prescriptions are not meant to be shared.
