  Disopyramide

Disopyramide

Disopyramide review by Medicalook.com

Disopyramide is an antiarrhythmic drug. Its function is to treat abnormal heart rhythms. It provides heart’s resistance to irregular activity. Then again, studies have shown that the use of Disopyramide have also increased the risk of heart attack. Antiarrhythmic drugs sometimes cause new irregular heart beats which may lead to heart failure. Disopyramide is no exception. That is why it is not always the first option to treat arrhythmias. It is only prescribed to carefully chosen patients and is administered under close monitoring.

Before taking Disopyramide, it is important that you discuss your medical history with your doctor. Any case of muscle problem, high blood pressure, glaucoma, kidney disease, liver failure, heart ailment, and prostate disturbance is always a concern. Allergic reactions that you may develop against the drug and its other components must also be looked through. Your doctor also needs to know if you are planning to become pregnant, is pregnant, or has just given birth. Although Disopyramide is not yet found to cause fetal or newborn (through breast milk) harm, it is still much safer to consult your doctor regarding its use.

Disopyramide comes as a capsule in 100 and 150mg integration. Immediate-release capsules are usually taken three to four times a day while the controlled-release or extended-release ones are prescribed twice a day. Disopyramide capsule must be swallowed in whole with a full glass of water. It is usually directed for use one to two hours after a meal. If you experience an upset stomach, however, your doctor may advice you to take Disopyramide with food. Drugs work best if a constant level is sustained in the body. That is why it is important that you take your medicine on time, as prescribed. If you missed a dose of Disopyramide, take it as soon as you remember it for as long as it is not too close to your next dosing schedule. If such is the case, you will have to skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule to avoid overdose. Drug overdose can be more harmful than under dosage. Still, it would be ideal to avoid both so make sure that you have noted the exact time you are required to take your dose and dutifully follow it.

Do not take alcohol while using Disopyramide. Alcohol intake may worsen one of the common side effects of the drug which is dizziness. Also, stay away from performing activities that require alertness. If you experience dizziness while driving, you are certainly putting your safety at risk.

Aside from dizziness, Disopyramide also causes mild episodes of constipation, stomach pain, urination difficulty, blurred vision, dry mouth, and headache. Talk to your doctor if you find your symptoms too much to bear. Other alarm signs include severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, irregular heart beat, unusual weight gain, swollen feet and hands, skin rashes, and fever. Make sure that you report to your doctor regularly for consultations so he would be able to monitor your progress with Disopyramide. Working side-by-side your doctor is your strongest support against the possible counteractions of the drug.
