  Diltiazem HCL

Diltiazem HCL

Diltiazem HCL review by Medicalook.com

Diltiazem HCL is the generic form of medications such as Cardizem, Cartia XT, Tiazac, Dilacor XR, and Diltia XT. Diltiazem HCL is often prescribed to treat angina, hypertension, and some forms of heart rhythm disorders. Calcium channel blockers such as diltiazem HCL are effective for relaxing the blood vessels and allowing the heart to pump blood through the body more efficiently with less effort.

Patients who have recently experienced a heart attack, have low blood pressure, or have certain heart conditions such as sick sinus syndrome without the aid of a pacemaker can not take diltiazem HCL. Other patients with conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, or congestive heart failure may not be able to tolerate diltiazem HCL or may require special monitoring while undergoing drug therapy, depending on the condition, the severity of the condition, and the overall condition of the patient.

Diltiazem HCL has been reviewed by the American Food and Drug Administration and has received a pregnancy risk rating category C. Diltiazem HCL has been proven to cause harm or birth defects in unborn babies and passes through the mother’s breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby. Women who are pregnant, are likely to become pregnant, or are nursing a baby should not take diltiazem HCL. Women who believe they might be pregnant should contact a physician immediately.

Diltiazem should be taken exactly as it has been prescribed by the doctor and patients should not alter their dosing schedule. If a dose is missed, the patient should take the missed dose as soon as it has been remembered unless it is nearing time for the next regularly scheduled dose. If there is not enough time between the time the dose is remembered and the next scheduled dose, the missed dose should be skipped and regular dosing can resume at the next dose. Patients should never double dose their medication in order to make up for a missed dose or any other reason. Double dosing as well as taking doses too closely together can result in an overdose. An overdose requires immediate medical attention and if an overdose is suspected the patient should be taken to the nearest emergency room. An overdose may complicate the patient’s health and cause symptoms such as weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, lightheadedness, fainting, and a decrease in heart rate.

Side effects are common when taking diltiazem HCL, although some side effects may be severe. Serious side effects associated with diltiazem HCL require emergency medical attention. Symptoms of serious side effects may include allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the lips, mouth, face, tongue, or throat), edema, swelling, quick weight gain, lightheadedness or fainting, shortness of breath, accelerated heart rate, decreased heart rate, fever accompanied by a sore throat, headache, and peeling or blistering rash, and nausea accompanied by a low fever, loss of appetite, stomach pain, pale stools, dark urine, and jaundice.

Most patients experience side effects that are not nearly as harsh and do not cause serious health risks or complications. Less serious side effects may include nausea, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, congestion, skin rash, itching, or the sensation of warmth, tingling, or itching under the skin’s surface. These side effects do not require emergency medical attention but should still be reported to the prescribing physician, as this can help determine the appropriate dosage of diltiazem CHL.

Other medications may cause negative interactions if taken with diltiazem HCL. Patients should never take additional medication without the consent of the prescribing physician. This includes all types of medications, including over the counter, prescription, and herbal remedies. Medications with a history of side effects may include beta blockers, St. John’s wort, seizure medications, HIV and AIDS medications, antidepressants, antibiotics, rifampin, midazolam, lovastatin, digoxin, dexamethasone, cyclosporine, cimetidine, and amiodarone.
