Chlorzoxazone is considered as a skeletal muscle relaxant drug that is used in treating different kinds of muscle spasms causing discomfort or unbearable pain to individuals. It works through the spinal cord and depresses the reflexes to prevent the spasm. It also blocks the pain sensations being transmitted to the brain.

Chlorzoxazone is a prescribed drug used to relax the muscles and helps to relieve pain due to sprains, spasms, strains, arthritis and other muscle problems. This drug is usually combined with physical therapy treatment. This drug is being distributed with brand names Parafon Forte, Paraflex, Remular-S and Relaxazone.

This drug can be taken orally 3 to 4 times a day. The dosage depends on the patient’s medical condition and response to the medication. Dosage is reduced once the patient is responding very well with the treatment.

It is best to take the drugs after meals with a glass full of water so as to avoid stomach upset. If you have missed a dose, immediately take it. But never use more than the required dose to cover up the missed dose.

Symptoms of overdose include vomiting, nausea, headache and low blood pressure. If symptoms of overdose occur, seek medical attention immediately to avoid the risks of serious health problem.

Some of the common side effects associated by using Chlorzoxazone include dizziness, upset stomach, constipation, heartburn and headache. This drug may also cause some liver problems that can cause fever, unusual fatigue, yellowing of skin and eyes. If symptoms of side effects occur, it is important to seek for immediate medical attention.

Prior to medication with Chlorzoxazone, it is important that you inform your doctor about your medical history like if you have any allergies to drugs, stomach problems, liver problems and other health disorder.

This drug is known to cause dizziness and drowsiness so it is best to avoid any activity that requires normal alertness such as operating machines, driving and doing extreme sports.

It is also best to avoid alcoholic drinks while under medication because it only increases the risks of side effects and hampers the effectiveness of the drug.

Also inform your doctor all other prescribed and non-prescribed drugs you are using most especially those that causes drowsiness such as sleep pills, pain relievers, cough medicines and drugs that are used to treat mental conditions. This drug only provides temporary relief for certain muscle disorders; therefore, it is still necessary to have sufficient rest and maintain the physical therapy program or exercises to obtain the full benefit of the medication. You must follow the treatment process according to your doctor’s advice. This drug should never be used or shared without consultation with a doctor.
