Chlordiazepoxide is a prescribed drug used to treat persons who are distressed due to alcohol withdrawals, depression and anxiety. The drug is also used to relieve fear from patients before undergoing surgery. It works through the brain and nerves of the body and produces a calming effect.

Chlordiazepoxide is classified as a sedative or hypnotic drug being distributed under the brand names Tropium, Novapam and Librium. This drug contains anxiolytic, amnestic and skeletal muscle relaxant. This drug is being administered to individuals suffering from anxiety or alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

Chlordiazepoxide is a drug that can be taken orally. The dosage is determined by the doctor based on the patient’s condition. While under medication, regular check up is conducted in order to monitor the response of the patient to the medication. This will determine whether there is a need to increase or decrease the dosage.

You must ensure to take the drug according to the prescription of the doctor. Never attempt to use the drug longer than prescribed because it will cause addiction to the drug. Your doctor usually decreases the dosage gradually before totally discontinuing the medication in order to prevent side effects.

There are some common side effects associated with the use of Chlordiazepoxide. Some of these side effects include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, headache and blurred vision. Before using Chlordiazepoxide for medication, you must first inform your doctor if you have other health problems such as lung disorders, heart problems, liver problems, kidney problems, blood disorder and if you have drug or alcohol addiction.

Chlordiazepoxide may affect your vision and reflexes so it is advisable not to engage in any activity that requires alertness such as extreme sports, using machines and driving a vehicle. It is also best to avoid or limit the intake of alcoholic drinks while under medication.

Elderly patients under medication should be cautious because they are more sensitive to the drowsiness effect of the drug.

Chlordiazepoxide should not be used by pregnant women and nursing mothers not unless authorized by a doctor. If you have plans of getting pregnant prior to medication, you must discuss it with your doctor.

There are several drugs that may interact when used together with Chlordiazepoxide. Such drugs include antacids, anti-depressants, anti-seizure drugs, sedatives, pain relievers, psychiatric medicines, muscle relaxants and tranquilizers. Inform your doctor if you are using these drugs and any other medicines before using Chlordiazepoxide.

The effectiveness of this drug greatly decreases for patients who are smoking. If you are a smoker or have stopped smoking recently, you must inform your doctor. He will determine the proper dosage for you.
