Cephalexin is a prescription medicine that is low dose in nature. As such, it is often used as a follow-up for a stronger dosage of cephalosporin or solely to treat mild versions of respiratory tract and skin infections. Due to its low dosage stature, Cephalexin may be inconvenient to take because it acts on a short-term basis. Regular dosage is scheduled more frequently than other, far stronger cephalosporin antibiotics. On the flip side, Cephalexin can be used over an extended period of time. The side effects are also milder compared to other antibiotics.

Your doctor would ask about your medical history, which should be answered in detail. Primarily, your doctor would want to know upon examination whether you are allergic to a cephalosporin type of antibiotic or not. It is also important for him to determine if you have an existing liver disease, kidney ailment, stomach disorders, or diabetes. Undernourished and pregnant patients are also watched closely. Occurrence of any of these conditions makes you a possible candidate for a different dosage or different drug altogether. At times, patients with delicate conditions are carefully monitored during the entirety of the treatment. Also, beware of certain drugs that may react differently towards Cephalexin. If you are using warfarin, meftormin, or probenecid prior to Cephalexin, you must remember to tell your doctor about it.
Cephalexin is taken as prescribed. You cannot use this drug if you are self-medicating. The doctor’s advice on the dosage is important to regulate the entrance of the drug in your body. Cephalexin is usually in tablet, capsule, and liquid form. You are only required to take it at a specific amount for a period of time. You cannot stop using it before the recommended period is over just because your symptoms are no longer there. Sometimes, symptoms disappear even before the bacteria are killed. In the same way, you cannot use Cephalexin longer than required. If you feel that you still have a need for it, go back to your doctor and ask for an advice anew. Take note that Cephalexin is not designed to tackle viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Another form of drug is devised for that.
Cephalexin may involve a couple of side effects including diarrhea, convulsions, fever, headache, sore throat, weakness, and urinating less than usual. These symptoms are common reactions of the body towards the drug. If you experience vomiting, extreme stomach pains, and urinating with blood, however, you must call your doctor immediately. Those are alarming signs that should tell you the drug is not working properly.
