Brimonidine is a prescription medicine used to aid in vision problems caused about by glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It works by reducing the amount of fluids and lowering the pressure in the eyes.
Brimonidine comes in liquid solution that is used as an eye drop. It is recommended to use on the affected eye thrice a day or every eight hours. Since Brimonidine is used as an eye drop, there are safety precautions that apply.
First and foremost, you must not go beyond the recommended dosage. Use Brimonidine as directed. Do not use more or less of it under any conditions.
Next, you must be extra careful when applying the drug in your eyes. Make sure that when you administer Brimonidine, you wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly. You would not want your affected eye to contact any new infection. It is better to have someone put Brimonidine in your eye. If someone is not available, however, you may use a mirror to ensure that you are putting the eye drop the proper way. Avoid holding the tip of the dropper for possible contamination of the contents of the bottle. After putting the eye drop, gently close your eyes and keep it that way for a few minutes until your eye absorb the medicine. After administering the drug, be sure to clean your hands again.
Before using Brimonidine, make sure that you talk to your doctor about your need for it. Your doctor will have to know if you are allergic to Brimonidine or any of its components. You must also tell your doctor about prescription and non-prescription drugs that you are currently taking to avoid possible interactions. If you are prescribed with another eye drop aside from this drug, make sure that you use it at least five minutes before or after you use Brimonidine.
Also, tell your doctor if you have any recurring medical condition including bouts with depression, blood disorders, heart ailments, and kidney or liver disease. The use of Brimonidine under such cases may require special consideration.
Before undergoing any procedure, especially surgeries (minor or major), tell your doctor that you are using Brimonidine so he can make the necessary adjustments on handling the process.
Be aware that Brimonidine has a drowsiness effect. Alcohol intake may worsen it so refrain from drinking alcohol while you are under Brimonidine treatment.
Patients who wear contact lenses must also take extra precautions. Remove your lenses before instilling Brimonidine and wait for at least 15 minutes before you put them back on.
A blurry vision right after you instill Brimonidine is a common side effect of the drug. Some other mild symptoms of side effects include dry eyes, watery eyes, burning feeling in the eyes, swollen eyelids, headache, drowsiness, sleeping disorders, dry mouth, coughs and cold, sore throat, and heartburn among others. Such symptoms usually go away shortly. If they persist or become severe, make sure that you talk to your doctor about it. Report to your doctor immediately as well if you experience allergic reactions, blind spots, dizziness, severe nausea, and fainting. Your symptoms of side effects must never outweigh your benefits from the drug. If that is the case, you must ask your doctor about the possible adjustments that can be made.
