  Becaplermin

Becaplermin

Becaplermin review

Becaplermin is a cicatrizant topical gel used in treating open diabetic ulcers and sores often found in the feet. It works by promoting the scarring of the wound in order to speed up healing process. It is derived from human platelets and is a human cell growth stimulant. Application of becaplermin on a wound first causes a rapid clotting of blood before stimulating the growth of scar tissue to fully heal the wound. Diabetic ulcers tend to heal much more slowly compared to ordinary wounds, possibly due to restricted blood flow. This leads to a higher risk of infection which may lead to amputation in the worst case.

Used in conjunction with other treatment for diabetic ulcers such as sloughing off dead cells, reducing pressure and infection treatment, becaplermin is often prescribed to treat these wounds and is available under the brand name Regranex. It is available in 2 g, 7.5 g and 15 g tubes. Diabetic ulcers are typically found in type 2 diabetes patients and are usually located in the lower extremities such as in the foot or ankles.

Becaplermin should be applied exactly as the doctors instruct you to. The amount of gel needed for each application varies on the size and extent of the diabetic ulcer and the doctor will regularly checkup and determine how much will be needed for the current size of the ulcer. Increasing the amount of gel applied more than prescribed amount of gel will not speed up the healing process. In fact, this may cause further complications to arise. Do not apply the gel more than once a day unless specifically ordered by your doctor.

Make sure your hands are clean and begin to wash the diabetic ulcer. Wash your hands again, and then squeeze out the exact length of gel prescribed by the doctor on to a clean non-porous surface. Then use a clean cotton swab or tongue depressor to spread an even layer on top of the ulcer around 1/16th of an inch thick. Use a clean piece of gauze to cover the wound and fasten with bandage and adhesive tape. Reapply gel after 12 hours and use fresh gauze and bandage to dress the wound again.

Becaplermin is accepted well by the body and does not exhibit a lot of adverse side effects. Some patients may exhibit rashes, but it is believed to be caused by the additives in the gel rather than the becaplermin itself. Infection of the underlying skin or even the bone may also be experienced, but this can occur even without becaplermin application.

Using more than the amount of three tubes of becaplermin gel may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Although not enough data is at hand regarding this conclusion, it has been shown in a study that those who use more than 3 tubes of becaplermin gel and then develop skin cancer are more likely to die from the cancer than those who have skin cancer but do not use the gel. Inform your doctor of this risk. This is also why it is of utmost importance to follow the prescription exactly.
