Bactoderm review
|
Bactoderm is a drug that belongs to the category of antibiotics. It is used to treat a bacterial disease of the skin commonly called as impetigo. Bactoderm works by blocking the activities of the isoleucylt-RNA synthetase, a type of enzyme.
This particular enzyme is needed by the bacteria in making proteins. By stopping its ability to create proteins, the bacteria will eventually die.
Bactoderm is prescribed for several skin infections which are usually caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. It is also being used to eradicate Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA that are inside the nose. Bactoderm may be used in treating other skin ailments which are determined by the doctors. This drug is being distributed under the brand names Centany, Bactroban Nasal and Bactroban.
Though this drug is used for skin infections, it should not be used on skins with severe burns because some of the active ingredients like the polyethylene glycol may cause serious damage to the kidney.
Before applying the medication, you must make sure that the infected area is clean and dry.
The standard dose for Bactoderm depends on the degree of infection or as prescribed by the doctor. A small amount of the ointment can be administered three times a day to the infected area. You may protect the infected area from dirt with a sterilized bandage. After 3 to 5 days of treatment, improvements should be noticed. However, if no signs of improvement occur, the doctor should examine again the infected skin and recommend changes on the dosage.
Use the drug strictly according to the prescription and do not stop medication until advised by the doctor. Stopping the medication prematurely may cause the infection to comeback and will only prolong the treatment process.
Drugs usually cause some side effects due to the reaction of the body to the medication. Bactoderm causes minor side effects such as itching, stinging, and burning sensation in the area of application. Some patients may experience skin irritation or rashes. If any of the side effects occur, inform your doctor or pharmacist before continuing with the medication.
Before using any drug such as Bactoderm, it is important to inform your doctor or pharmacist all other drugs you are using which includes herbal medicines, prescribed drugs and non-prescribed drugs. You must also inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to polyethylene glycol or similar drugs. It is also best to inform your doctor if you have kidney disorder or other disease.
This drug should be used only based on the prescription of the doctor. It should not be shared to others without medical consultation.
Breast feeding mothers and pregnant women should consult first a doctor prior to medication to ensure the safety of the child.
Avoid contact of the ointment to the eyes, mouth or other areas of the face. Bactoderm is for external use only and should not be swallowed.
Store the drug in a safe storage away from children’s reach.
